So is it better/easier/recommended to go for a music ed major instead of a music performance major (BA) for med school? I really love to play and from what I’ve read, both have equal amounts of ‘playing’ involved. I feel like the teaching portion of the music ed major might be a good ‘work experience’ for the applications to med school. Is that true?
Sit down with the sets of courses that are required for the music majors and for the pre-med series. How many total credits will you need to cover? Check the course schedule on the college/university website, and see when all of these classes meet. How many conflicts are you likely to have?
The major you start out with is not guaranteed to be the one you finish with because you might change your mind along the way. So start in the major that is harder to transfer into if you change your mind. My guess would be that music performance is the harder major to get into later on.
Music performance is a tough demanding major. I’m working with such a premed right now and his only non-A’s are in super-tough music performance classes.
So, to answer your Q, yes, it would be easier to do Music Ed.
You could major in *music/i. This might be a path to consider.
Agree with merc81, major in “musical studies” or “music.”
Thanks @iwannabe_Brown @merc81 @mom2collegekids @happymomof ! I really appreciate it! So if I do go with a music ed major, is that bad ? Or if I choose a performance?
Is there no general “Music BA” at your college?
Genuine question:
If OP picks Music Ed, might med school wonder about his/her commitment to medicine, the way they would for someone in nursing or business or criminal justice?
I would say music/musical studies>music ed>music performance. You should major in an academic subject. A BFA in music performance is not an academic subject and there are plenty of schools where you can pursue music as an academic subject.
Oh ok. So is a BA in Music Performance/Music Ed considered academic, rather than a BFA? @iwannabe_Brown
I would imagine but am not certain, that
BA music = BA music with an instrumental performance concentration > B.ed music education > BM in performance
Oh, thanks! @MYOS1634 !
What’s exactly do you want to do with your music? Do you want to teach? Do you want to perform? Do you want o compose? Do you want to conduct?
You need to know YOUR direction in music and convey that clearly…or it is very difficult to answer your questions.
Do you want to become a doctor? On one thread you mention becoming a lawyer. And on another a double major in Sanskrit.
Do you really have any idea what you want to do with all these majors and minors and different degree requirements?
I will tell you…the requirements for music education are very different than for music performance.
Why music? There could be a VERY good reason…but you sure haven’t articulated it very well.
