Hi helicoptermom,

Although there are many instrumentalists who choose to pursue a degree/minor in music, it is not necessary to know how to play an instrument in order to study music. In fact, one can not have had any musical experience before entering college and still be a music major; that is what college is after all, discovering new fields previously unavailable to you. Since your daughter is a singer, she already has the basics of music theory down and studying in music will build upon this knowledge while expanding her studies of music into non-performance related aspects such as history. I am pursuing a music minor, so if you have any questions on the specifics of the music department here at BC, please feel free to ask. Hope this helped!

@kimisizer. …thanks so much for all the information. I will let my daughter know the points you mentioned.

Dear helicoptermom24 : Hope that this note finds you well. Your daughter can also avail herself of opportunities with the University Chorale, BC BOP!, a cappella groups, and other performance arts based on her level of interest and talent.

As far as course work, have her take the Introduction to Music Theory course which is fairly easy and can be used to meet one of the core requirements. If she is interested, move next to the Harmony course which will be a substantial step upwards in difficultly but will allow her to decide on moving towards a minor somewhat early in her college career.
