Music Management degree or certificate?

Hello!,
I'm a Junior in High School and I've been trying to figure what would be best for my career towards a band manager.
Would it be better to get a degree in Music Management or a degree in Management Buisness with a certificae or minor with Music Management?

If you could help me with an idea it would be a great help!

Thank you so much!,
Sarah

I have no professional or educational experience to answer your question, but can offer a few suggestions in that might help you in at least identifying some options to consider.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/957443-music-business-industry-management-technology-production.html</a> contains a series of links to past threads, as well as some general background info that might prove useful.

Understanding that what you may perceive as a career goal as a junior in high school may well change down the road, you want to look at schools that could allow a fairly easy shift in majors.

As for music management, the general degree path and requirements can vary widely between institutions, and at some, you may well be able to craft a somewhat specialized concentration based on your own specific needs. Much of the music management coursework will involve what is typical general business coursework in accounting, aspects of business law, marketing. The music management specifics will include discipline specific aspects, including artist management, dealing with agents, contracts, non profit operations, perhaps some specific required coursework involving music history, maybe a bit of theory, and perhaps even a performance based requirement.

In looking at any of these programs, it’s important to go beyond the initial description on a school’s webpage. Go deep into the specifics, and look at the actual degree requirements for each program (and the variants that can exist). Understanding and knowing what is and is not possible within a program is often a key factor in determining if it makes sense to include that school on a short-list.

Same for minors… know the availability, what coursework can be available to students. A number of the specialized disciplines can have courses available to non-majors, but often a number of the upper division or “meaty” options are not available to minors. Again, this info is typically found deep within an institution’s undergrad handbook.

There may be some additional outside sources I’ve forgotten about in the thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/608305-useful-music-links.html</a></p>

I realize I did not answer your question, but hopefully provided a few thoughts to pursue.

A lot of music management is learned on the job (I did work in the business for some years); it might be a good idea to major in business (or even a liberal arts/music major) and invest time in internships inside the business. You can do internships during the school year or during vacations. Some colleges give students the opportunity to do full-time internships for some semesters. Depending on what aspect of management you want to go into, your knowledge of music and of the world, and of business in general will be a great asset to you.
