I got the impression that studying music at Harvard would leave one very caught up in the theory..
I don't think I'd want to major in music, maybe take it as a secondary though- but I'd very much want to maintain a performance focus (I'm a classical singer) - theory's boooring =)

What about musical THEATRE at Harvard? Could I construct a minor of sorts in that?

While you are likely to get some answers to that question here, you will probably get even more if you also post that same question on the Musical Theater section over at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/

Thanks, will do =)

If you major in Music Performance anywhere, expect to do 1 to 1.5 years of Music Theory. All that other stuff makes you a better musician. Even if you want to be a soloist, being able to blend with everything else going on on-stage is important.
