I don't think Harvard has a major as such in Musical Theatre, but I would only want to minor in the field anyway, or construct a minor of sorts.

I got the impression that studying music at Harvard would leave one very caught up in the theory, whereas I would really want a focus in performance (singing) and in theatre too.

Do you think I'd be able to take courses in music and theatre and construct a musical theatre minor? Are there at least some famous musical theatre societies at Harvard?

Thanks!

Radiopost, if you get involved with the Gilbert and Sullivan society on campus you will have enough musical theater to fill every moment of your life! Perhaps you could major in theater and take private voice lessons, and act in the musicals for four years. I don’t know how good their theater department is, we’ve only known one kid to go to Harvard for that, and it wasn’t really his choice, it was his parents’. I think he may have chosen theater as a major because it was the least likely to appeal to THEM.

I know very talented MT kids who chose to attend Harvard. While I agree with skipsmom that you could minor in theater and take voice in terms of coursework…I think the real experience for you there is that Harvard has many extracurricular theater endeavors and you could be very engaged in theater and musical theater there. This is also true at Yale. You may also want to look at Brown as well. Theater and MT are very active on these campuses. Same with a capella groups, by the way.
