I’m seriously interested in pursuing a Music major at Barnard. As a vocal person, I was wondering about performance opportunities…I will go crazy if I’m unable to sing in a few choirs!! Please help me out!!

I’m a prospective student as well, although more interested in theater, I am very passionate about singing. I recently took a tour there and at the information session, someone asked a very similar question. Between Columbia and Barnard, they have tons of singing and acapella groups. Additionally, they have connections with Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music, where you apply and (for an extra cost) can take voice lessons there and graduate with a Barnard-Columbia-Julliard degree, for example. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your help!! I actually might pursue a theatre degree as well…I’m just not sure yet. As long as I can be around the arts I’ll be happy.

There are multiple a capella groups at Columbia and one Barnard one (Bacchante) that you can audition for. There’s a Barnard-Columbia chorus which I think is not competitive, but definitely a great opportunity to sing. Try looking at both the Barnard and Columbia student groups listings on their websites. The Barnard list is incomplete I think, but if you cross-reference with the Columbia one you should get what you’re looking for. If you to go Student Services on the Barnard website, then click College Activities Office below the Community Life heading, you will find it. There are lots of opportunities.
