How is the music program at Barnard?

And also, for current/former students, have any of you tried taking classes at Julliard? I’m trying to find some schools where both the music programs and academics are strong, and although I’ve looked at the website and such- I want to hear from some real people. Thanks!

I guess it would depend what type of music. I’m a current vocal student, and I am very pleased with the music/academic experience. I chose Barnard over some really excellent conservatories, and I feel like my musical education is just as good as it would be at one of those institutions. The music department is very small and personal, they give you so much individualized attention! For voice lessons they have a pool of very talented teachers from Julliard, Manhattan School, and the University of New Haven, among others and you audition once you arrive at the school. It’s quite competitive, and they only accept a few students every year. I have an hour-long voice lesson every week, and then for the music major at Barnard there are ten classes we need to complete, including a four-semester theory sequence and a senior recital. If you want info about instrumental music I can’t help you as much, but I do know that for certain instruments a dual enrollment/lesson exchange program exists with both Manhattan School and Julliard. I would look on the website for more info or email Dr. Gail Archer, whose email should be on the website. She’s the chair of the department and she’s really great.
