Music scene at Dartmouth?

I'm curious about the music scene at Dartmouth. Are people interested in music? Are there student bands, do people play in coffeeshops, are guitars found in dorm rooms? I was also wondering if there are good shows that come into town. Even though Hanover is small, does the college itself attract touring musicians? Thanks!

My S is a huge music-lover of classic rock, jazz, and eclectic bands. He’s not fond of popular music, though. The one frat house that played his kind of music just had a fire and is closed. He is somewhat disappointed with the music scene at Dartmouth, although he’s attended some excellent performances at the Hop. He’s wanted to attend concerts in the outlying areas, but since freshman can’t have cars and free public transportation runs on banker’s hours, he’s been unable to get there. Once he’d planned to go to a concert five hours away with an upperclassman, but decided he didn’t know the kid well enough to guarantee nothing would go wrong and he could get back for classes the next day. I haven’t heard about guitars in rooms. My son didn’t take his and doesn’t really play that well. What he is the most enthusiastic about is Dartmouth’s music library - larger than our public library and all music. CD’s are available for check-out, ten at a time.

It’s fair to say that S is a cautious joiner and has not looked too hard for others who share his taste in music. This term he seems to be reaching out a little farther, so hopefully will find others soon. I hope this helps you.

@delvedeeper: Thank you for opening the thread! I’m really interested in this topic, too! I hope you wouldn’t mind me asking questions in your thread ^^
Also, thank you for the reply, getalifemom!

I’m a fan of electronic music and have a great passion for electronic music composition. I’m not going to be a music major, but I’d love to pursue my interest, so I plan on taking a course on electronic music in college. I’ve done some research on Dartmouth’s Digital Musics and am impressed with the facilities and resources that the department has. Do you know how common it is or a girl at Dartmouth to take a digital music course? Is electronic music popular at Dartmouth? Also, are there a lot of opportunities for members of the class to present their works publicly? Thanks!

How active is the hardcore kid scene? :P

thanks for the insightful post getalife mom. That music library sounds incredible. And vnese, I’m glad you are interested too!

I’m into a lot of music including classic rock, but what I really like is acoustic, folk-sounding music. I play piano, guitar, and ukulele and I am passionate about playing music. I’m probably not interested in studying music for a major or minor, but it is a big part of my life. I was just wondering if students at Dartmouth share my interest. So far I really love Dartmouth. I would love to hear more input.

When we were there for Parents Weekend, we spent an evening in the pub, where a stream of D kids performed on piano/guitar and sang. S brought 3 instruments to D–violin, accoustic and electric guitar–and took up a fourth while there, on which he recently auditioned for and was given free lessons. There are a lot of really good concerts at the Hop.

So while it doesn’t have the music scene you’d find in Boston or NYC, there seems to be a fair amount going on.

I’m also really into the music scene too! I really want to room with a musician, wherever I end up!

There’s definitely a good amount of touring artists at the hop. If you’re into Jazz there’s a ton of stuff to do there(it’s my main focus). We have the Barbary Coast Jazz band which is pretty good and there’s some groups you can join if you’re still getting better at playing. There’s some good jazz history and jazz classes and the music department is pretty good with its classical musical offering. The Hopkins Center for the Arts has a lot of visiting artists that come into the jazz classes along with their concert. The past term we had Dianne Reeves(Grammy-winning singer) come into our class and talk about improvisation. There’s a lot of jazz and classical stuff at the Hop. The a capella groups good and are pretty big on campus, though their repertoire is basically the pop music of the time.
