I've been in band forever and I really want a music scholarship to USC or the University of Washington. If anyone knows, I was curious on how music scholarships work. Do I have to get accepted into the school first and then apply for the scholarship? Or if I'm good enough, would it be possible that the school let me in if they want me in their music program? I'm confused. So can someone please explain it to me? Haha! Thank you! :)

If you are applying as a music major, you will need to audition to get accepted as a music major. Any scholarship money will be based on the strength of your audition.

There is a very active music major section to this forum. If you want to major in music, post your queries there. Lots of helpful folks.

Check the websites for the schools you are interested in. They will have information on auditions and tell you whether scholarships are available for non-majors. A lot will depend on your instrument. My son plays a less common instrument at a high level. He auditioned as a music minor at a school that is about mid-level for music and received a scholarship.
