Hi,

I am new to this forum, just wondering if anyone have experience in music school waitlist? on waitlist before? please share your experience. Thanks.

It happens and it even happens at the big name schools, and some of those kids do get off of the wait list and in the doors. One important thing to have your D/S do is to make sure that the school knows that it is her/his top choice. If they win any competitions,, have a lead in a show, etc. let the college know. Also, have your student call the Admissions Office several times/week and again, tell them that she really want to go to "School X" ... This may sound odd, but I not only read it in several books over the past few years, but gave the same advice to a school mate of my D's, and that girl is now attending Syracuse, her first choice school (and she was moved off of the Wiat List by the end of May). The only things to remember are, be very polite and accept the fact that scholarship money is not usually forthcoming to WL students. Good Luck!

I have heard advice similar to this before, and I have also heard admissions officers who have said that under no circumstances do they want to get calls several times a week when there is no new information forthcoming. Certainly call with important news like competitions won and leads in shows, but you have to be careful with the frequent calls. It may work for you with some admissions officers and against you with others.

I think waitlists are different for conservatories than they are for regular schools. Conservatories work with a relatively small number of students at each instrument. If several of their admitted students in a particular instrument decide to go elsewhere, the school is going to go to the waitlist. However, unlike regular schools, my guess is that there is some ranking that is in play on the waitlist that is based on audition.

If your child has a relationship with a teacher at the school, it might help to contact the teacher and see if they know what the waitlist status is. My son was waitlisted at his top choice. At that particular school, acceptance is essentially done by the studio teacher. Son contacted the teacher and found out that he was the only one on the waitlist but that the teacher did not anticipate having openings. (I think the teacher was trying to let him down easy - a courtesy waitlist if you will.) Since we knew what the situation was, son was in a position to move on.

Good advice BassDad and shennie- I would be tempted to go through the Prof too, but a call or e-mail to Admissions one is worth a try. As I said, it worked at Syracuse and it just worked at Ithaca for another girl we know. I think its all in how one approaches it…

Do these same tactics apply to summer program wait-lists? If I was to call a program I’m wait-listed for and tell them I won 2nd in an important recent competition, would it have any effect do you think ?

Cosmos, I can’t see that tactic hurting. It may change your position on the list, it may not.

If you keep accumulating feathers in your cap, you’re going to need a bigger cap.

Go for it, Cosmos! Those are just the sort of things that can make a difference. Anything that can set you apart from the “herd” is a plus!
