SUNY Stony Brook University is on Long Island, and is also worth a look into. Their music program is not bad. CUNY Brookyn’s Conservatory of Music is another one.

Also keep in mind that Philadelphia is just a couple of hours away from NYC, and Boston is about 4 hours, and both have wonderful options of places to study as well. Either of these cities will be way closer to NYC than Eastman, Syracuse, Fredonia, and Potsdam.

Curtis was mentioned earlier. You could also consider the Boyer School at Temple University, also in Philadelphia and, while not quite in the same league as Curtis, is an outstanding music school. Trains between Philly and NYC only take about 2.5 hours and the service is frequent.

Train is about 1.5 hours… better, you can get a Bolt or Megabus for between $1 and $13, depending on when you book, and the travel time is about 2 hours, give or take. The buses leave from a location right next to 30th St. Station and drop off a block from Penn Station. Service is even more frequent than the trains, which run between $40 and $80 one-way unless you take the Acela, which is about $130 but even faster.

hi rachel, my son is a freshman in the voice department at msm. He did receive a scholarship and he knows of several other freshman who received scholarships, so have faith! I do think the information on the board is correct, though, and he did receive higher scholarship offers from other conservatories. Also, nyc is insanely expensive, so be prepared. The meal plan is pay as you go, which is probably not an issue for a young woman, but for a young man - it’s another story…

The nice thing about nyc is the access you have to the arts and artists. It has only been 8 weeks and he has already attended two master classes with famous singers - one with Stephanie Blythe. He met her and had a chance to speak with her for a few minutes and get some advice. He has attended about 5 operas at the MET so far because the school gets a student rate. His lessons every week are at Lincoln Center and in his studio he meets and has the opportunity to make connections with people who are performing there.
