Has anyone heard anything about the sudden drop of this major?????????

Hey all - this is Andrew Farrier, the Admission Coordinator for the Arts and Architecture at Tulane. I’ve spoken with the current applicants who are considering studying Music Science and Technology with us, including the original poster, but in case anyone else is curious I’ll explain what’s going on with our Music Science and Technology program.

Because of a change in faculty, the major in Music Science and Technology is being temporarily suspended. We are still offering a minor as well as a range of coursework. At least through the 2012-2013 academic year, a welcome addition to our faculty, Professor Richard Snow, will be teaching composition courses with a focus on electronic and electroacoustic music, as well as courses in Algorithmic and Computer Music and Electroacoustic Music Analysis. Professor Snow has also started a student ensemble for electroacoustic music; several of its students performed independently on campus this fall and the ensemble will perform together for the first time this spring.

Tulane and the Newcomb Department of Music remain dedicated to furthering the study of music science and technology and we hope to have a decision regarding the future of the major in short order. In the meantime, it is certainly possible to garner extensive experience in the field at Tulane while majoring in music, composition, or another field.

I’m having trouble finding music department admissions info at the Tulane website. For a prospective student applying for the BA in Music, are there separate admissions fdr the department and University? What are the audition requirements?
Thanks.

I would e-mail Mr. Farrier privately, since he may only look at this site occasionally. afarrier@tulane.edu There is not separate admissions, one of the great things about Tulane is that all undergrads are accepted into Newcomb-Tulane College, and you can major in whatever you want. However, I am sure if you are wanting a performance major there will be auditions to determine your level of proficiency in order to place you at the right level, or something like that. He can provide you with more specific info in that regard.
