Dual Degree @ Loyola??

Hey,

So, I have been accepted to tulane's music dept., and will be attending this fall, but the thing is you have to take core classes mostly the first two years. I was wondering if I could do a dual degree at Loyola (which reputably has the better music program) so that I could start with music in year one instead of junior year? Or, do they not do this.

Hmmm..this is something you should be talking to Tulane music people about, but I doubt very much you'll be locked in to nothing but core for two years, JB. My son has just finished his second year even though he will have enough credits to be classified as a senior by fall, and he's been taking courses up through grad level--with appropriate prereqs and permissions, of course, in his neurosci major. Next semester he's got everything from 100-700 levels.

I think you'll find more freedom than you seem to expect. I'm a little confused about why you're excited about Tulane if you want your major at Loyola..? Did you not apply there? Maybe you will transfer there?

haha. No, I don't want to major at loyola, i was thinking of taking a few classes there if i was restricted my 1st and/or second years, if you know what i mean.

On my tour they said it's really easy to take classes at Loyola, and they actually recommend it for people doing artsy stuff.

I think ctymomteacher is right and you will not find the distribution requirements as restricting as you think and you should talk to your advisors about courses at Loyola. I believe they are fairly liberal about allowing you to take stuff not offered at Tulane but don't have any first hand experience. I do know that at least in the past we had teacher prep programs where you absolutely had to take a numer of courses through Loyola which has a school of education.
