[I feel as though this must have been discussed in the past but couldn't find anything.]

In the process of packing D up for college, I am amazed at the amount of stuff that is apparently Necessary To Bring To School. I can handle the shoe storage, the clothing storage, etc. but am not sure what to do for all of the sheet music she wants to keep handy. I'm thinking some sort of plastic tote to be stashed under the bed? Any suggestions?

Do the standard sized ones at Walmart/Target fit? To my eye, they look as if they might bend the corners up.

We're lucky enough to have inherited an actual music cabinet at home so have never needed to deal with this before.

If there are prior discussions, I don’t recall them. And I just searched on a number of permutations, and got nadda.

Anywho, the solution son arrived at were the collapsible cardboard file storage boxes and file folders available from Staples. I think he bought 3 or 5 packs of the flat boxes/covers, and kept them flat till he needed another one. He may have used legal size. Made for easy, neat storage and transport.

Added: so much for my search skills. This http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/978691-binders-music.html
was at the bottom of page one. No wonder I couldn’t find it.

Added #2: There may be some info here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/711055-what-do-performance-majors-really-need-take-college.html?highlight=tux. This one’s worth bumping now anyway given folks are starting to get ready if not already on the way.

My son got a portable file cabinet. It is essentially a plastic bin that can use a hanging file system if you want one. I think we got it at Office Depot. Make sure you get something that can hold legal size sheets since music scores are sometimes bigger than 8.5 x11.

Daughter used the same thing shennie describes. She usually kept hers in her music locker or sometimes in the semi-private practice room that she shared with two other bassists.

Ditto Shennie for DS

S has similar file system, a set of 3 plastic drawers, file on bottom and 2 smaller above for music supplies (strings, rosin, etc.). It is sturdy enough to support stacking bins on top. I think we got this at Target but can be found at any discount department store or Staples. He only took what he thought he would really need, figuring his collection would grow quickly, and if he needs something from home it only takes a few days to send.

Good ideas - off to shop. Having searched fruitlessly for storage for otherD’s 11x14 photo prints, this one should be a piece of cake (she said, recklessly).

Violadad - thanks for the links. Remembering that Mezzo’sMama’s D wanted to take 50 pairs of shoes to school makes my D’s 10 Essential Pairs look positively frugal!

Success! I ended up with something called a scrapbook file that also has a hanging option. It will definitely fit under the bed and maybe even in the locker. Thanks, everyone!
