CDs

What should I do to bring my cd collection to college. I've got over 400cds and it wont ALL fit into my ipod.

What happens when lecturers and professors assign listening material, do they expect you to go out and purchase the copy they recommend, is it available at the library to be borrowed, or do students pass around a copy.

Please help me with this process, as I feel that it is not neccessary for me to rip and bring all my cds with me to college.

My son is a student at IU, and they have an excellent music library there. He is usually able to borrow the music he needs. He also bought an external hard drive for his laptop, so he could store a bunch of his music on that.

My S carries his CDs in a CD notebook -- Takes them out of the hard cases, and slips them into the CD pockets. I think Susantm's method of external hard drive could be a good one, too, but my S plays his on CD players when he goes to bed, and doesn't want to be chained to the computer.

At S2's school, if there is a specific recording students need to listen to, the teacher puts it on hold in the library, and the students use a "listening station" - can't check it out. If it's just a certain piece - not specific recording, then any CD with that piece on it can be checked out, or students can trade among themselves.

Northwestern has a listening center with a ton of stuff....also, the Evanston library has a great collection....

Our son asked for an MP3 player last Christmas.
The model he specifically asked for is a clunky, larger, 'uncool' one by Creative. It's capacity is HUGE and he loves having all his personal music on there as well as his assigned music to stufy.

Daughter has something like 80 pounds (weight, not British monetary value) worth of CD's that she insists on carting back and forth from home to dorm. She stores 'em in a few large plastic containers purchased from our local mega-warehouse store. We got her an iPod (hint, hint) but she doesn't use it much.

As binx pointed out, listening assignments are often done in a media room in the school library. The teacher generally provides a list to the librarian, who will reserve a copy or two of each recording for use only within the library. It is usually a good idea not to wait until the last minute because several others undoubtedly will. You may wish to ask about school policy before ripping tracks from library CD's to an mp3 player.
