Hi everyone,
Wondering about how I should go about writing my essays for music supplements. Since I’m not applying as a performance major I am interested in putting the best foot forward in my essays. I’ll be submitting a recording of myself directing my choir wherever possible and I have a few supplements that I already have applications for.
My question is mainly about the appropriate level of formality in music supplements vs. regular supplements. I’ve been advised to write the Common App essay basically like I talk/think, which is tough for me since I translate my thinking into writing and automatically make it more formal For instance, USC’s music supplement for my intended major includes a 2-page (!) essay about why I want the particular degree and why I want to study at USC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
USC really likes to see that you know the school and how it best fits with what you want to pursue. Give specific examples, mention faculty that you may have interacted with, if you have visited campus talk about something specific that you liked, and if you are applying to Thornton, talk about why you want a conservatory that is part of a large university. Conversely, if you are not applying to Thornton, but want to be part of the musical life on campus, talk about that.
Speak in your own authentic voice, and if that tends to be formal then go with that! Just be clear, specific, and passionate about why you want to attend USC.
You can try speaking out loud for your essay and either recording it or having someone else write it down. But I wouldn’t worry too much about authenticity or sounding too formal if it is YOU who is writing it
Are you applying for a BA in music? A BM in something other than performance? A BS? I feel like it would be helpful to know a little more, if you are willing.
If you send a video, make sure to include a music resume (most likely the supplement your were provided suffices) and letters of recommendation from a couple of teachers or directors if possible. The latter can make a difference, in my view.
Don’t worry too much about the essays!!!
