Music Supplemental Question!!!

Hi,

I’m good at the saxophone, I’m not all-State or anything. I’m just first chair in the school select Wind Ensembe and the Jazz band. I am not conservatory material, but I did self arrange a piece that I thought might show my creative side. Should I send this in? I will be sending this along with a the first movement of a conservatory level piece. I want to stress that I’m pretty good at the sax, that I’m pretty close to all state cutoffs at the auditions, but I’ve never made it. please answer quickly…

Thanks

I would not send anything that is not truly exceptional (conservatory-level) as it will not move the needle on if you are ultimately accepted or not. I imagine that you have put that you are first chair on your application so you don’t need to send music supplements. You need to understand and respect that admissions officers are swamped. Of course it is your application and your choice.

@happy1 thank you for you response, i have one more question…would sending in a supplemnt at my talent level (good but not conservatory) hurt me? I was thinking of sending it into a few schools…if it doesn’t move the needle, why not send it in anyway it can’t hurt…thnaks

I don’t know the answer (and the answer may not be the same at every institution). Some could feel that you are wasting their time when they are already very busy. But again, it is your decision. You can ask your guidance counselor for advice as well.

OP what types of schools are you applying for? Do you plan to perform music in college? Study music?

@ClarinetDad16 Top 25 Schools. UPenn in particular. I was looking into a music minor, economics major, and an active participation in music.
