Do colleges prefer students who play instruments to students who are good artists? Do being in a music class look better than taking art classes throughout high school, even if its AP level? I mean this for people not majoring in theses areas but writing down art or music as an extra skill.

It depends on how passionate you are about the subject. I took orchestra freshman year and dropped out of it for art. I am really talented in art and have been drawing as long as I can remember. An advanced art class probably looks better than a general music class, at least for me that is.

Grades in Art and Music classes are much more subjective than in those in the core curriculum.

Is your art/music ability and passion at a level where you are in a position to submit an art/music supplement? If so then plan to submit one. The supplement can enhance your application. If you do not plan to submit a supplement, I doubt that it makes a difference which you take.

If you’re just using it as an extracurricular, then they will look at the level of the art or music. If you provide a supplement, or some awards in either, then it will be a good EC either way. So they won’t look at either better than the other.

Just for reference, it’s similar if you’re applying to major in that. If you plan on applying for art or music, it just depends on your relative skill to other people applying.
