I'm trying to think about whether I should take art or orchestra as an elective next year. My school has block scheduling so I can't do both. I have a real talent and passion in art and it really makes me feel good about myself. But I heard that orchestra looks better for colleges and some of my friends are in orchestra. I took orchestra freshman year and was in art club but I wasn't in the actual class. I played the violin in elementary school and middle school but I've been drawing for as long as I could remember. I have to take Art I first before I get to the advanced classes and it is a basic course and might lower my gpa. Which should I take next year?

Orchestra in my mind would only look better if you’re better at violin than art, and it doesn’t seem to be your case. Go with art and enjoy yourself (:

Thanks! It’s just that my friends in orchestra keep on annoying me trying to get me back in. Oh well, at least I’m doing what I like.

I really dont think you should pick an elective that doesn’t make you happy and you aren’t passionate about just so it looks good on your resume. I had the same issue, and I dropped music to pursue art just because personally I liked it a lot more. Plus, colleges like uniqueness and individuality as well, and they may be biased towards music, but they value diversity more than musical ability. If most people submit applications with music and you have art, they might just pick you over them to boost the diversity of their student body. So in short, don’t worry about it. Pick what you like :)

Thanks for the advice!
