Hi all,

Do any schools offer musical theater transfer programs? If not, does anyone know of any solid BFA programs, or BA programs in the performing arts?

Are you asking if any musical theatre programs will accept transfer students? Yes. Some, however, will require you to complete the entire four year course sequence at their school. Others may allow transfers to complete the program in three years. My guess is that most schools would not allow a transfer student to spend only two years at the school. Training at most schools is specific and sequenced. I teach in a BA MT program and we do accept transfer students, but generally they will enter at sophomore level in our program, even if they have already completed two years at another college.

You should check with each of the schools in which you are interested directly to find out their policy for transfer students auditioning and being admitted.

You can also find some discussion here if you put “transfer” into the forum search box.

My daughter transferred to a BFA MT program this year but had to go in as a sophomore, even though she had enough units for junior standing. As Kat said, most of the BFA programs are sequenced and specific so require transfers to “re-do” some of the classes. Of the programs my D was accepted to, only UCLA would have taken her as a junior, and it is a BA program. As far as solid programs, there are many discussions on this forum regarding the various programs available. It would be helpful if you could list some of your criteria regarding what you are looking for: location, size, audition/non-audition, etc.

Hartt accepts transfer MT students, however I believe they start as freshman. We had a girl visiting earlier this semester and auditioning who was trying to transfer from UNCSA.

American University in DC accepts transfer students. It is a BA program, and I do not know what standing they come in as.

University of the Arts accepts transfer students into the BFA MT program. The spots available are limited. In some cases, credit may be given for the first year of studio classes but this is decided on a case by case basis.

Syracuse accepts transfers; they do have to start as freshmen, but it is possible to finish in less than 4 years if you have enough other credits.

You have to start as a freshman if you want to go to the boston conservatory. VERY RARE exceptions are admitted as a sophomore.

PS. The BA program where I teach (and where we accept transfer students) is James Madison. :)
