Also @marksmith811 I have responded to a few others with all the info we used to make a decision about committing to UArts. If you look through my posts you can find it.
@RMT549
Thanks for the insight and congrats to your daughter! It is an exciting and stressful time for our kids (and us!)
The schools we are comparing are very different so in a way it does make it harder.
He believes he would get excellent training in either program. It’s more a matter of comparing styles, opportunities, and overall fit. The zoom meetings and FB chats are helping him get more information and a “vibe”.
Hello, hope everyone is doing the best they can in these uncertain times. My D is looking at Ball State MT and Roosevelt CCPA MT. I know a lot has been said about Roosevelt on this thread already but if anyone has any other information or information on comparing the two, we’re all ears!
Hi everyone. My D got accepted to BoCo for MT but we really don’t know much about the program other than what we’ve seen online (e.g. that it’s ranked highly and has a large number of graduates on Broadway). Since my D has never been to Boston, she’s concerned about accepting her offer sight unseen. We would love to hear from CC members whose S or D currently attends or is a recent graduate. In addition to hearing about the classes, performance opportunities, etc., we’re also interested in information about the facilities, the dorms and the neighborhood. Thanks in advance!
@Daddily My D did not audition for BoCo but we live about 3 miles from there. BoCo is in the Fenway/Kenmore Square neighborhood of Boston, which has experienced a complete gentrification over the past 5-10 years thanks to a change in Red Sox ownership at the time. Very walkable, tons of restaurants and shopping nearby. The MBTA (subway system) is also nearby. As you probably are aware, Boston is full of colleges and universities so there’s a lot going on. We have both auditioned for regional theatre inside BoCo classroom buildings- they are sleek, modern and secured. We know many BoCo graduates and a former instructor- they are extremely talented and also lovely people. Can’t speak to the performance opportunities or dorms at the school but Boston has a vibrant theatre scene that I hope will rebound after this pandemic. Happy to answer any questions about Boston in general, we’ve lived here since 1993. Best of luck and congrats to your D.
@Daddily my D graduated from BoCo in May 2019 and loved her experience there. The “campus” consists of several buildings within about a half mile from each other and among a very active area of retail and restaurants (not to mention Fenway Park is just around the corner). Anywhere a student needs to be is within easy and safe walking distance. The dorms, which house freshman students only, are located mostly on Fenway Street in charming but old, walk-up (no elevators) brownstones. They are mixed among other residential buildings where mostly college students live. The dorm rooms all vary in size and number of roommates. My D shared a two room (plus bathroom) unit on the first floor with four other girls. Not gonna lie, it was pretty tight, as was the apartment she rented with two others for her sophomore-senior years, but that didn’t seem to be a big deal for most students. That area in Boston has to be one of the more expensive in the country, even more than some parts of NYC. I’m a born and bred NY’er, but really grew to love Boston. It’s such an awesome city.
So while the price tag/cost of living at BoCo is the major negative IMO, I think performance opportunities are one of the best benefits. In additional to several mainstage musicals and plays each semester, there are TONS of faculty and senior-directed productions, cabarets, showcases, songwriters nights, improv shows…and those are just the BoCo affiliated opportunities. Berklee also has performance opportunities as well other equity theaters who regularly audition and cast BoCo students.
Each class (usually about 50-60 students) are split up into “cores” of 12 or so kids. These kids take most of their classes together, so class sizes are small. Each year the cores are reestablished so the kids get to work with and become close with most of their classmates. The curriculum is intense, with 30+ hours of classes each week, which I’d imagine is fairly typical for any MT conservatory program.
Hope this helps! Please reach out if you have any other questions, I’m happy to answer!
@BoogieMa @Bogeyw That you so much! The information that you provided is incredibly helpful. It sounds like an amazing school (I just told my D that I will take her spot if she doesn’t LOL). She has been concerned about the large class size but the “cores” sound like the perfect solution. If we think of any more questions I’ll let you know. Take care!
@ElizaDoolittle - where did you see that? We had an admissions officer tell us at a PA college fair that if their school was in our top 10, we should go ahead and put a deposit down so we could guarantee housing on campus and that was before she had even auditioned let alone had an offer. We didn’t do that and now she has an offer and it is one she’s really considering. And what about people who accept an offer and then get off a waitlist for their top choice school?
@RMT549 If there are a couple of serious contenders and they’re schools that recommend and allow you to put a housing deposit down without committing to the school first, you could do that. They actually recommend that you put a deposit down even before you’re accepted to the school at Minnesota, because housing priority goes by date of deposit and it opens in the fall. What you can’t do is commit to more than one school and deposit for enrollment. You can only do that at one school, as @ElizaDoolittle pointed out.
@TenaciousC - okay that makes more sense…I just figured when you make the deposit for housing, I thought you would need to put in a deposit for enrollment as well.
Thanks for clearing that up. And @ElizaDoolittle - no need to reply, I get it now.
It was a college counselor who told us that. If you accept an offer and then get off a waitlist, it is of course, okay to put down a second deposit, but you are telling the first school at the same time that you will not be going there, so it isn’t as if you have two deposits in place holding spots at two schools.
Too, late! I didn’t see this before I replied. Glad it all makes sense now.
@MadameT and @Libish - my D goes to Tisch, not Steinhardt, but I did want to answer the question about the split of performers on Broadway. Steinhardt MT is a much smaller program than Tisch MT and MT is a small portion of Tisch Drama overall. In the years I looked at Playbill data about 20% of the NYU alums on B’way went to Steinhardt, which means for those years Steinhardt had a higher percentage alums on B’way than Tisch. Those numbers may fluctuate wildly so I wouldn’t take that as permanent “gospel” but they are definitely turning out very well-qualified MT performers. I can’t answer about dance or acting - I do think it is a heavily music focused MT program; my d chose to apply to Tisch because the curriculum fit her interests better.
Thank you @CaMom13 - appreciate that information. Seems like an incredible program. The more we learn about Steinhardt, the more we like!
@MadameT - no problem, if you want any details on student life at NYU in general, please feel free to PM me. The students from different schools all get mixed together in dorm life and my D’s roommate of 2 years is/was in Steinhardt (not MT).
@TheatreDad69
Otterbein is a small liberal arts school in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. The college is beautiful. Small, but not small. Division III (I think) school with all the usual college sports. Greek life is all local (no national fraternities or sororities- at least that’s the way it used to be). Not really a factor on campus. Theatre program has a small number of students, but their performances are top notch. New head of the theatre department is injecting new blood. Otterbein is working on becoming more culturally and ethnically diverse. Last semester of senior year includes an internship in NYC to help the students network. There is a reason Otterbein is consistently in the top MT programs in the country. One of D’s friends is a costume major and love it. She was set to go to school in the UK, but made a visit to Otterbein and fell in love. Also, downtown Westerville is a couple of blocks from the college. Lots of cool restaurants, wine bars, etc. Very artsy. The college and surrounding area is safe. Downtown Columbus also has a great arts scene. If Otterbein is offering a good aid package, I’d definitely consider it. You son will get a great theatre program and a great liberal arts education.
@MamaBear2020 Thank you so much for the insight. It is greatly appreciated.
@Daddily - has your daughter attended one of the virtual info sessions! Current students are participating and answering questions. My son is an MT sophomore, and I concur with the info in the other posts!
As my D gets closer to making a decision, (without visiting schools as many people have stated), I am looking to gain perspective on schools. D is BFA MT WL at Ball St - so we are quietly investigating - with all that is going on in the world, Muncie IN feels very far away. Accepted to Hartt for BFA Acting - but isn’t feeling it. So we are focusing on 3 other schools. Muhlenberg (BA Drama/Psych), SUNY Fredonia (BFA MT), and Hofstra BA to start, BFA MT (Maybe) in Soph. year if accepted. I have found lots of info on Muhlenberg and we did have the opportunity to visit. Loved the program and flexibility, and excellent DANCE! - D thought it was way too small. Found some info on SUNY F and a few people who know the program a bit & D is in conversation with current students - but D wanted a bit more urban area. Hofstra has been hard to get a read on. D wants more collaborative environment then competitive, we can’t seem to get a vibe on Hofstra. What’s their reputation - both for BA and BFA? Would love to hear from people! Thanks so much CC is so helpful - I mostly lurk and read and REALLY appreciate those who post and joke and care.
Any advice on Utah MT vs. Molloy/CAP21?
