Musical Theatre- Comparing Top Choices

@AmarilloTX – interesting novelty with waitresses being armed. I bet that makes patrons think twice before sending back an under cooked Salisbury steak

@StanfordAI2019 you are going to be the reason this platform installs a laughing emoji button for posts.

@StanfordAI2019 I bet nobody skips out on the check

@SingerDancerMom - Although I can’t comment on Texas State being a party school - I can say that your D will NOT party if Kaitlyn has anything to do with it - at our information seminar, she basically said she will throw you out of the program if you are vaping, and if you are late to class without a sick note she will send security in to get you.

She said she puts everything into training her kids and expects just as much dedication.

Full disclosure I was not a fan of FSU - didn’t like the town, difficult to get to - I never saw Texas State but I thought Kaitlyn Hopkin’s was the most impressive person I met through this entire experience. She gets things done and makes things happen - if it doesn’t exist she creates it - I love people like that! It would be a no brainer for me - although I would need to actually see the school. I have no idea where San Marcos Texas even is - so that’s something to look into.

@DivaStageMom San Marcos is only 30 miles south of Austin, Texas which has contributed to the party reputation of Texas State.

For what its worth, I’ve lived in Texas since 1974 and never seen anyone open carry, and neither did my son at TXST. That said, I am sure there are plenty with concealed carry permits who do.

And Kaitlin Hopkins stands behind what she says. I am aware of several students over the years being “asked” to leave the program due to failure to abide by the contract they sign. Kaitlin is compassionate to the nth degree but there is some stuff she won’t tolerate. These kids are young and make mistakes, but a big one can see you looking for another program. That said, Kaitlin makes very clear of what she expects from them, to act like the professionals they are training to be.

My D is accepted at Oklahoma City University & AMDA (selective at all?). Waiting on Pace, Syracuse & NYU. I thought she was sold on OCU, but now she’s killing me, doubting the location. Her background is classical voice & Shakespeare. Any thoughts/info on OCU?

OCU is a great place for training. My son went there for their summer camp and loved the faculty. The classical voice training at OCU is second to none. Good arts community too. OKC has the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma which has great summer stock. The downsides, if you want to call it that, from by view, are the larger class size (24-30) and deciding if you want a BM instead of a BFA. Bottom line, a school that produced Kristen Chenowith and Kelly O’Hara has to be doing something right. My son is currently on a national tour with an OCU alum and she loved it.

@Alisa OCU has a very nice campus and the Wanda L Bass Music Center is one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen on a college campus. What about the location is she concerned about?

Would love to hear thoughts on the MT major at Hartt. Thanks!

@Alisa we loved OCU and it is a leading contender for us.

agree with all @AmarilloTX stated…if you search @vvnstar she has many many posts & is the guru for all things OCU. We loved the facilities and Dr. H the program director at the info session…In addition to all that this might be compelling for your daughter…

Re: location, we are from a small town in the deep South & I think she just had it in her head to be in the northeast—bright lights, big city. .The town is great, the facility is beautiful, & unlike any of the others. Trying to reason with an emotional teen… walking a tightrope. It’ll be a joy when all this is OVER!

@Alisa Oklahoma City is a pretty good size city with a metro population of well over a million. Close to downtown is an entertainment area called Bricktown which I enjoy visiting. The recent news that Kristin Chenoweth will be on campus teaching masterclasses each semester is, to me, a huge selling point. As has been said by others, there is no better voice training in the country but it is not at the expense of acting or dance.

@MTDadandProud - I didn’t think that it was a bad thing - she (Kaitlyn) runs a tight ship - she said she puts everything into the students and if they aren’t willing to make the same commitment its not the right fit.

As I said, I thought she was great - I think someone would be very lucky to work under her guidance for 4 years.

But if your s or d wanted to party and vape for the next 4 years it would be the wrong program.

A friend of my D’s from her summer program got admitted to Molloy/Cap21 and LIU-Post, and is questioning which route to go. They seem to both ‘Top 30’ programs at small colleges ‘outside’ of Manhattan. She said she likes LIU’s focus on Acting (Suzuki, even in MT focus), but CAP has the name and the additional Manhattan location. I told my D I would ask on this board for her friend. Any perspectives welcome and appreciated. Thanks

Re:TxSt DD attended summer program Nexus. The campus and area are hilly. Food meh. The staff were mainly TxSt MT majors and there was a lot of catty chatter about KH’s peccadilloes. As indicated above she runs the program with a strong hand and that gets discussed. A lot. KH keeps her mother’s Tony proudly displayed. Some say it casts a long shadow.

KH is a strong acolyte of type classification. Playing counter to or outside of type strongly discouraged.

What DD distilled from her experience was there were favorites and nonfavorites (for whatever reason). DD saw the males got positive attention while the females could be sharply corrected in front of a group. All of this of course thru the lenses of a teenager, but would advise, especially for girls, to talk to present students ‘off the record.’

Let’s just say based on her summer experience DD decided it was not a fit for her & did not apply.

YMMV.

@MTisNutz I appreciate your candor.

Feedback needed about dance at Arizona. I understand it is nearly impossible for MT students to take leveled dance with dance majors - being a top dance program in the US. Anyone know first hand whether dance offered to MT is leveled or challenging if a student is a strong dancer?

A question regarding dance for MT at MMC. If not aware, all MT dance classes are taught at Pearl Studios, not on campus. MT students have daily dance at 8AM so an early ride on the train every morning. Are those classes leveled? Are they focused on one single dance style each semester?
