Musical Theatre in Ontario, Canada

Hi everyone!

I applied to the three musical theatre programs in Ontario: Sheridan, St-Clair and St-Lawrence. Yet, I auditioned for St-Clair and have succeeded to enter the program! I’m auditioning for Sheridan next week and it is my top choice. How do you guys feel about all of these programs? Anything in particular that I should know?

If I don’t get into Sheridan, should I choose St-Clair or St-Lawrence? I don’t have a lot of information about St-Lawrence yet… Anyone?

Thanks!!

I don’t have first-hand knowledge of either program (and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who attends those schools on CC), but I do have friends who attend both schools and who are quite happy. I’ll see if I can put you in touch. I’ll offer you the old standard CC advice, though–if you’re stuck between two programs, a good place to start is doing a comparison of the curricula. If dance is most important to you (for example), see what school meets that need best.

@Lauren33 My friend and I both auditioned last week for Sheridan and LOVED the program. Sheridan is the only Canadian school I applied to, I applied as an international student to several US programs, but Sheridan is one of my top choices. My friend is only applying to Canadian schools, Sheridan is her top choice followed by Randolph, St-Clair and St-Lawrence. She has already been accepted to St-Clair as well and has done the other auditions minus St-Lawrence and is still waiting for all other results. From speaking to her, while St-Clair is not a degree program, they do provide a way for students to go through another audition process to complete additional credits elsewhere and get a degree (Randolph does something along these lines too, St-Lawrence does not). This makes St-Clair her choice over St-Lawrence but I’m not sure how this information would influence you. Best of luck to you!!

@Roro101 Would you know what the admission rate is for the Sheridan MT?

@AlphaScorpii – from a Facebook photo I have of a high school classmate of mine, I think 61MT (the current freshman MT cohort) has about 43 students, with a pretty even male/female split. To my knowledge, they aim for 45 every year.

Thanks! I wonder how many audition for those 45 spots…

@AlphaScorpii‌ at the audition they said that they had several hundred apply (did not give an exact or approximate number) for about 43 spots

Thanks @Roro101 :). I could see from your previous posts that you are a dancer, how did you find the dance audition?

@AlphaScorpii‌ I found the dance audition to be quite straightforward but it was challenging for many people who don’t have a lot of dance training.

Broadway Dreams Foundation faculty in Atlanta recently did some work with Sheridan and have been “singing its praises” saying the talent and instruction is amazing

This is such a tense time for everyone, I hope what follows will give you a chuckle
I was looking at Ryerson University’s BFA in Theatre: Performance Acting audition requirements. Beside your classical and modern monologues, interview, and a group movement ‘warm-up’, you have to:
“Prepare a “Personal Presentation” in which you DO a whole play of your choice in THREE MINUTES OR LESS. This is not to be a lecture based on the story of the play. You are expected to DO the whole play. Please do not ask for further clarification – it is up to you to interpret the meaning of “DO”. You may choose any play from any period, any language, and genre (including musicals). No recorded sound, props, music, or costumes are permitted in your presentation.”

Note: All this (including the “personal Presentation”) is performed in front of the panel and the rest of auditioning candidates)

I think that is actually a really interesting idea- would certainly give a panel interesting insight into a candidate

I agree 100% toowonderful. My chuckle came after I started to imagine whart some of the outcomes might be.

I think it’s an interesting idea, too, but I think my D would’ve been a little freaked out about it with all of the other requirements for college auditions and the number of auditions she did. Normally, she’d think it was a fun excercise, but it probably would’ve felt like too much for this time.

I did the Ryerson audition: some of the personal presentations were very interesting! The most nerve-wracking thing about Ryerson is that you have to watch everyone else audition…My personal presentation was about Gypsy–I went back to the text and assembled a monologue about Louise’s increasing frustration with her mother treating her as if she weren’t good enough or invisible. Ultimately, I wasn’t accepted, but it was an interesting exercise!

@CanadianMTgirl - you are my hero! :slight_smile:
Has anybody sung their presentation?

I sung a little bit of “If Momma Was Married” in mine–only a few bars! But some sang more. This would have been two years ago, but I remember a girl who put together a Mamma Mia medley for hers. The problem with Ryerson is that they’ll only hear a minute of your personal presentation in your initial audition. If they call you back (same-day), that’s when they want to hear all three minutes of it. So I suppose my advice to Ryerson prospectives would be to use your first minute of that presentation well, whatever that means to you!

@AlphaScorpii I meant to get back to you but somehow got distracted and forgot. Spoke to a friend who is the associate dean at Sheridan and this year they are auditioning 430 kids for 45 spots.

Thank you so much @alwaysamom!
