Musical Theatre Student Cut and Wants to Transfer!!!

I am currently finishing my freshman year as a musical theatre student. I recently had my assessment and was cut. This was pretty sudden because usually the larger cuts happen at the end of sophomore year. However, this year 20 were cut. I know this is what I want to do with my life and want to keep training. Can anyone out there suggest any schools that offer musical theatre or even voice training programs with a musical theatre emphasis that may take me this fall or spring!?!? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you!

20 freshman just cut? Wowzers. Scary for those of us with HS seniors…

Cut from where?

Ouch…sorry to hear that. One school comes to mind since I am possibly attending it next fall. Columbia College Chicago has a great MT program (BA and you can audition for BFA in Musical Theatre Performance sophomore year). The school has rolling admissions and open enrollment. They will definitely accept you for this fall, and you could graduate in that program or transfer until you find a new program you want to continue in. Columbia’s credits transfer very easily. The program has a mixed reputation, but I know MANY talented MT kids going there who love it and have gotten amazing internships/done professional shows in the city before they have graduated. Another option is always going to a community college for a semester or two. I hope everything works out for you!

Is there a geographical region you need or prefer to stay close to?

I am so sorry to hear that. It is ghastly when a student is cut so late in the school year when auditions for transfers are done. (Anybody know if anything is still open for transfer auditions?)
I hope they gave you some concrete reasons for the cut so you can figure out what it is you need to do to grow at your next location. Don’t leave the place without some good answers from the faculty. I think it is reasonable to expect that.
Later if you can tell CC where this happened, it would be good information for upcoming students to know in advance.
Best wishes for a great future!

Here are a few late auditions:

Best of luck!

It’s an appalling thing for a school to do to its students, but I agree with classicalbk. It’s wise to get as much feedback as possible, even if this is a very difficult and upsetting situation. I have to wonder if the school in question is Arizona. This sounds very much like what has happened there probably every year since I’ve been on CC. I’m always surprised that so many kids keep applying there.

So sorry to hear this…I cannot imagine having to go through this, especially after what it takes to get INTO a musical theatre program. I am sure you were thinking you were set, for at least the next 4 years that is. And 20 STUDENTS…if these were all freshmen, HOW MANY DID THEY ACCEPT??? This would encompass 2 entire classes at most schools! Hope things work out for you and best of luck on your upcoming auditions!!

Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio
**April 20th/b This is an unpublished makeup audition day

They also accept video auditions.
Call and talk to Kristen, the auditions coordinator.
You will need to apply to the university before you can upload an audition, but call Kristen first to get details.

Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan
August 17, 2012 Audition date for Fall 2012 admission

While an August audition date may be much later than you want, it may still be a good option.
I just called for details. They do not have a set number for their program, even at this audition.
They will give you an answer then and there – if accepted, they will get you scheduled for classes ASAP.
I explained your situation and she said they would be glad to audition you and the other 19!
For Oakland, you will need to send an audition application and HS&R. Not sure if you have to apply to the university first, but their app is online, quick, and free.

Wishing you all the best!!!

This is so wonderful! Thank you so much I am very grateful! You are awesome!

I would absolutely consider Ohio Northern. It’s a small, newer program and actually just had it’s first student perform on Broadway within the next week. Both heads of the department are great and their students are receiving exceptional training. I just got back from a visit and am thoroughly impressed. It’s definitely moved itself up to the top of my list.
