musical theatre - vocal performance focus

To clarify - as BWMT09 said, Baldwin-Wallace isn't in Cleveland and is only "close" if you have a car - it's not in a suburb that directly connects to Cleveland, it's a fair driveable distance on interstate highways - I wouldn't really say it's that "near" Cleveland, in fact. Good school, though! (My brother lives in the city of Cleveland and is a grad student at BW - and I used to live and teach in Ohio. His driving time from home to BW is 35-40 minutes, almost all on highways.)

CoachC - you are absolutely correct, and we've been there a couple of times and know some graduates, as well. BW is located about 4 miles from the Cleveland Int'l airport, and in fact the hotels that are about a mile from campus are all called the "airport" hotels of the various chains. You are correct that one would need a car to get downtown. It seemed about a 15 mile, 20 minute trip to downtown, but we met some MT students at BW that work downtown.

I should have clarified - my brother lives on the east side of Cleveland, so it's a longer trek for him - but where he lives is a cool cultural area that would likely interest college students, as it's near Case Western U., John Carroll U., the Cleveland Museum of Art, etc. But you're right, Ericsmom, downtown Cleveland (where a lot of the the professional theatre action in Cleveland is) is closer to BW.

Hi, do you know anything firsthand about Westminster's musical theater program? It sounds interesting but if you know anything or have any personal experience with it that would be great.

University of Miami has a Vocal Performance major offered through the Frost School of Music.

Oklahoma City University does indeed offer a vocal performance major. We also offer the Vocal Arts Institute each summer at OCU. It is a one week intensive vocal performance program that is directed to those who wish to study classical voice/opera, or who want to study classical vocal technique. It is a one week program with a demanding, pre-college curriculum that includes private lessons, diction, vocal rep and foreign language.

Admission to the Institute requires an audition submission. Scholarships and financial assistance are available. Dates for this and all OCU Summer Music Programs will be released in December. Those on our contact list will receive first notification. If you would like to be added, simply send your name, mailing address and email address to JoBeth Moad at jmoad@okcu.edu.

If i am auditioning at all of these schools for MT...if the school does not offer a interview at the same time as the audition should i schedule an interview? or is the audition enough?

I think you are informally interviewed during most auditions.

If you want an amazing musical theatre program where you can receive legit vocal training in both classical and musical theatre styles you need to check out Ouachita Baptist University. It's a smaller school so you get a lot of personal attention. The faculty is amazing and all practicing artists. You can get either a BM or BA in musical theatre and there program is very good with a high acceptance rate into grad school.
