Musician Spots as an Admissions Factor at Top Universities

Hi,

I’ve been wondering about this hypothetical situation, how much the current members and openings of the school’s orchestra/band would influence admissions.

Suppose a school during its past cycle admitted a French Horn player that showed interest in joining the orchestra, and actually did so, mostly filling up the orchestra section for next year’s applicants. If you are a French Horn player applying during next year’s cycle, would you be at a disadvantage? Moreover, if you happen to be a French Horn player from the same area/region as last year’s French Horn admitted student, would that be even more of a disadvantage?

Maybe I’m overthinking, but it would be great if you could share your thoughts.

You are over thinking this. At some colleges coaches will get a tip (or more) for athletes. Colleges trying to recruit for orchestras are generally music schools that require an audition. Top schools seek different kinds of students to fill their seats. Some play instruments and others don’t. That is just one small facet they consider.
