We have just finished our tour of this college and my musical son is all set to go after falling in love with it. My concern is after he is finished with a 6 month inderpendent artist certificate, what is the success rate for getting a job

It depends what he is going for, but if it is a performance degree of any kind, it is likely he will be like any other music person out there, there are no guarantees of a job. It isn’t like coming out of a college and looking for work in an office or whatever, he would be one of many musicians out there trying to make a living. Even with music training like recording engineering, it isn’t easy to get a job, even though that is closer to an ‘office’ style of job.

If it is performing, then it is going to be networking with people, looking for gigs, and potentially having a day job to be able to pursue it, it is much like anything in the arts, drama, dance, whatever, it takes persistence and networking and luck to make a living at it.

Is he only going for 6 months? I would seriously question the utility of that. Even for music majors, a 4 year college degree rounds out a number of skills like writing that are transferable to other fields. Plus, through the gen. ed. requirements they get exposed to other areas of study. Not to mention the value of gaining 4 more years of maturity before being sprung out into the world to make it on their own.
