My adult child

My daughter spent five years at a state school. She was dismissed on academic grounds after her fifth year. She has depression and mild learning disabilities. For two years, she has taken courses at a local college and at a community college. She bit off more than she could chew and suffered more set backs. At 28, she has about 104 credits total at varying institutions. Now she is talking about changing her major. We (husband and I ) ate unemployed and she is 60k in debt. Before she throws in the towel, any suggestions? Would excelsior or empire be an option for a ny state resident? We are at our wits’ end. She is suffering and heartbroken.

Very orry to hear such a sad tale. Is there any window open for degree completion at her state school? Was it a SAP issue? Sometimes you can take a few CC classes or at another institution and reenter. That may be the best route. I don’t know how she would satisfy the in-house credit requirements all colleges have. But sure contact those colleges, compose a letter and try them.

I think changing majors should be out of the question and degree completion should be the priority. At least she can then get jobs that only ask for a degree and there are many of them. Student debt is limited to 27k so she herself can’t go any more than that and shouldn’t.

I just took a look at a past post too. I think she could also consider just working and doing an adult degree completion. She really squandered her last year and she was old enough and knew her way around college enough to know what was going to happen if she didn’t complete classes. So unless she has reflected she really shouldn’t spend more money. Also if she is not in mental position to complete classes. See these tips as a starting point to do a post mortem on what went wrong and how to stop repeating it.

Many thanks!

Many thanks! Looking into Empire.

Many thanks. Have to look up SAP

SAP = Satisfactory Academic Progress
In the student handbook, usually you can find it online (google it) for her particular school, there will be a section on what is required for maintaining enrollment and maybe some information on what happens if you are dismissed.

you are so kind. Many thanks for the advice.
