My chance at Engineering schools

Okay I'm new at posting these things, but I'll give it a shot

I'm a rising senior and here are my stats:

Academics:
GPA: 93.24 UW (we don't do weight) with an upward trend only junior year

I go to a magnet school; All courses are on the Honors level:
Algebra 1- Pre-Calc, Spanish 1-3, English 1-3, and we take two Science classes every year usually one with an emphasis on marine science.
Only B's are in English
We do not have AP courses at our school but we have dual-enrollment (college credit) courses.
Next year's schedule: Astronomy, College Calc, College Oceanography, English 4, Comp Sci, Envi Sci,

Test Taking:
SAT: 2030 (620CR, 770M, 640W)
2nd Attempt: 2160 (700CR, 770M, 690W) Should I study and try again in November?
SAT II: 760 Bio
670 Math II, 690 Chem: Took for fun before I knew the material (will not submit unless required)
I plan on taking the Physics and Math II in October

AP Tests: Bio and Chem- scores have not been received yet
ACT: Plan on taking in September

Extra-Curriculars (very weak, don't even look):
Boy Scouts- a few years but I slacked off and probably not getting Eagle
Shore Bowl- Oceanography competition but the teacher was not really nice so I quit Junior year
Math League: Went to every competition but I wasn't the best in my school--there's no trophy for 2nd :(
Chinese School- I volunteer here every weekend during the schoolyear
Medical Center- I am volunteering here starting this summer (I know, kinda late...)
Other clubs: Tutoring, Human Rights Club

I also take courses at my local community college during the schoolyear and I have been getting all A's so far (I hope this is impressive it's the only thing that stands out to me)

Work: At my family restaurant 10-20 hours/week for most of the year (I worked to much sophomore year and my grades dropped a bit)

Who I am:
Chinese American- PLEASE TAKE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION INTO ACCOUNT.
Low income- $25,000/year but we own a restaurant (worth around $100k), have stocks (another $100k), and some condos that we rent out (not paid off and not really earning any money from them)
I live in New Jersey

Here's my list:

REACH:
UCLA
UC-Berkeley
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon

MATCH:
Boston U
Rensselaer
George Washington
University of Rochester

SAFETIES:
Rutgers-New Brunswick
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
SUNY Binghamton
Stevens Institue of Technology
Ohio State University
Penn State- University Park
University of Maryland- College Park

Possibly Considering:
USC
Purdue
Virginia Tech
University of Virginia

Please correct me if you think I mislabeled anything (match, safety, reach). Also, take into consideration that I am going in for Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering so I will be applying to the Engineering school of any school on my list. Additional schools will also be considered but I mostly want to narrow down my list of colleges so that I am not overwhelmed with applications. For the most part, I think these colleges have strong undergraduate engineering programs (again, correct me if I'm wrong).

If any of you attend any of these schools or have visited them, please feel free to give me an opinion of its engineering program or academics in general.

THANKS!

Dude, AA does not work for Asians. There are too many of us.

If you have low income, I would suggest that you don’t apply to UCLA and UCB. They don’t give much FA to OOS students. Cornell and Carnegie Mellon are not terrible reaches, but they are reaches nonetheless. Good list.

Thanks, man
I know it gives us a disadvantage, but I thought that it was still called AA

Oh, and I kind of need help narrowing down my list, so any educated suggestions would be greatly appreciated : )

@Hawkace‌ do you know if other OOS schools reserve financial aid to in-state schools or just the UC system?

Chinese Americans are not considered URMs. But there are some colleges where your ethnic background would provide diversity to their student body. Schools in the Dakotas and Montana, for example, might be worth considering…and there are some good engineering schools there that would be safety schools for, you, and would provide merit aid possibly.

If you can afford the UCs differential of $23,000 plus your EFC, apply to those UCs. Otherwise, I’d suggest not.

Have you considered adding Case Western Reserve University to your list? That might also be worthy of consideration.

@epan1997‌ A lot all of the Public colleges offer minimal to no financial need-based aid to OOS applicants. I am sure that Penn State and UC’s offer close to no grants to OOS. OSU however does give decent aid to OOS. You will also get merit at OSU.

Perhaps keep all of your matches, take out UC’s and put in USC as another reach.

REACH:
UCLA-Reach Don’y Know for sure
UC-Berkeley-Reach
Cornell-Reach/High Reach
Carnegie Mellon-Reach/High Reach

MATCH:
Boston U-Match
Rensselaer-Match/Low Match
George Washington-Don’t Know sorry
University of Rochester-"

SAFETIES:
Rutgers-New Brunswick-Low Mtach
Worcester Polytechnic Institute- IDK
SUNY Binghamton-Safety
Stevens Institue of Technology-IDK
Ohio State University-99% acceptance but not 100%
Penn State- University Park-Low Match
University of Maryland- College Park-Low Match

Possibly Considering:
USC-Match
Purdue-Low Match
Virginia Tech-Match
University of Virginia-Match

Thanks, @BusinessInsider‌ @bartmta‌

Your list seems pretty accurate and realistic. I do admit that your SAT score and extracurriculars are not as good as they can be, but I like that you’ve been getting As in college courses and improved your SAT the second time around. I agree with your list, and don’t have much else to add or move around.

Maryland and PS-UP are not safeties unless you are in state. Ik personally PS-UP for Engineering direct admit is much more difficult than reg. admit.

RPI, U of Roch, and GW would be greater safeties than the ones listed above

You would get a full tuition scholarship at University of Alabama:
http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html</a></p>

'Bama would thus be both an academic and financial safety for you. Unfortunately, they do not have bioengineering, although they do have biochemical electives. You might consider their pre-med chemical engineering path:
http://che.eng.ua.edu/files/2012/02/ChBE_FlowChart_Pre_Med_Option_3.pdf</a></p>

Thanks, I took PSU off my list for financial reasons. For Maryland tho, I know that there is no separate admissions for engineering. I’ve been using the net price calculators and the UC schools and they are not significantly more expensive than other out I’d state schools (I don’t know how accurate they are)

@NROTCgrad‌ I’m honestly wary of going too far south (I might be an outcast). If I decide to change my major, I might reconsider.

Virginia Tech is a GREAT school for engineering–you should definitely apply there ! plus with your stats you should get in. I’m not sure what affirmative action is but if it works in your favor then i guess its another plus  Good luck for your college apps

Affirmative action goes against Asian Americans. Ironic both even have AA in the name ._.
For the UC’s, though, they dont have AA so i guess thats a plus. You’re OOS, however, so that’s a negative.
REACH:
UCLA: Lower reach than UC Berkeley. UC’s cost alot of money for OOS (that’s OOS in general), though.
UC-Berkeley: Reach and costs alot of money
Cornell: Reach: Reach, but they actually dont focus as much on the SAT as you would think. I know a person with a 2190 who got in, so you’re not that far off. Then again, you would be applying to Cornell’s engineering school; I believe it is one of the harder schools to get into in Cornell.
Carnegie Mellon: Low reach

MATCH:
Boston U: Match
Rensselaer: Match
George Washington: High Match
University of Rochester: Match?

SAFETIES:
Rutgers-New Brunswick: Safety
Worcester Polytechnic Institute: ?
SUNY Binghamton: Low Match
Stevens Institue of Technology: ?
Ohio State University: ?
Penn State- University Park: Low Match
University of Maryland- College Park: Low Match

Possibly Considering:
USC: Why not you do the same application as UCB and UCLA. However, its 70 dollars more.
Purdue: Match
Virginia Tech: Low Match
University of Virginia: High Match

Chance Back
<a href=“Another regular Asian... Please Chance I'll Chance Back - #49 by wimbus2 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>Another regular Asian... Please Chance I'll Chance Back - #49 by wimbus2 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums;

thanks, @Wimbus1233‌ . I’m pretty sure USC isn’t part of the UC system, so it should have a separate application right?

Chancing back now

IMO :
REACH:
UCLA (take out due to lack if aid)
UC-Berkeley (take out due to lack of aid)
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon

MATCH:
Boston U
Rensselaer (more of a high match imo)
George Washington
University of Rochester (more of a high match low reach imo)

SAFETIES:
Rutgers-New Brunswick
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (prob more of a low match then safety)
SUNY Binghamton
Stevens Institue of Technology
Ohio State University
Penn State- University Park (take off I believe they lack aid to oos)
University of Maryland- College Park (take off I believe they lack aid for oos)

Other than those I commented on, you list looks very accurate. And I would keep Ohio State on your list bc of their generous oos scholarships  good luck!

I suggest drop 1/2 of the out of state publics (probably Berkeley too much of a reach, and either Penn State or Maryland) - not worth the price and not likely to get good enough merit aid.

i would say your list is quite accurate however some universities offer little financial aid (berkeley, ucla, pennstate)
i would suggest also applying to virginia tech for safety…

chance back?
