My chances are schools like UCLA

Hi Guys, I am posting this thread to see what my chances are at high tier schools (UCLA and some others, but mostly UCLA) that aren’t as high as schools such as Harvard and MIT, but still good.

MOSTLY FOCUSING ON UCLA (but also similar tier schools that have the similar amount of fame)

I will post my stats down below:

MAJOR:

Computer Science (Software Engineering)

LOCATION / ETHNICITY

Public School located in Washington, US (good area, with the majority of people being moderate income)

Race: Asian

Family income: VERY HIGH ~$400,000 annual (will this be a disadvantage? I don’t take advantage of this in any way)

AP CLASSES:

AP Human Geography (4)
AP World History (5)
AP Statistics (5)
AP Chemistry (5)
AP Literature (4)
AP US History (4)
AP Calculus AB (5)
AP Computer Science Principles (5)
AP Computer Science A (5)
AP Language (4)
AP Government (5)
AP Calculus BC (5)
AP Biology (5)

HONORS CLASSES:
Honors Literature 9
Honors Literature 10
Honors Physics (no AP class)

SUBJECT TESTS:
Math 2 - 800
Physics C - 760
Chemistry - 780
Maybe Bio (undetermined so far)

SAT - 1570

ACT - 34

Weighted GPA: 4.5

Unweighed GPA: 3.975

EXTRACURRICULARS:

Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team (2 years)

Tennis Varsity 3 years, JV for 1 year (played alternate for varsity and practiced with them freshman year) (total 4 years)

Camp Casey (A camp for helping disabled kids, full week stay at an island) (4 years)

Took online courses in programming that helped enrich my knowledge, and made many personal projects that are posted

My essay writing skills are decent, but not incredible

Thanks you so much for reading, and please give feedback down below!

Seems like you aren’t worried about full pay. UCs will be expensive for OOS at 65,000.

Although the GPA/test scores are sufficiently high, I don’t see that much related to programming/CompSci. So call UCLA a reach just because your stats are going to be the same as most applicants, but with nothing distinguishing.

No need to take Bio SAT subject test. Math 2, Chemistry, and Physics are enough.

So you’re saying that if I have extracurriculars that are related to my major will distinguish myself?
I am actually just a sophomore, and I posted my predicted stats that are parellel with my current accomplishments.
I am planning to trying to do an intern at companies that my dad works in (Amazon and Dell), if I can get in. Will doing that and other things bring UCLA down to a good chance of acceptance?

Also, what are some things I can do in my extracurriculars that are related to computer science and will distinguish myself from others?
Yes, I am not worried about full pay.

Wait until you have real stats and then you can be chanced. Hypothetical stats rarely come true…

It’s rare for high school kids to find internships at those types of companies. Do stuff like robotics or AMC to get started.

I agree with @Hamurtle that until you have these actual test scores, a waste of time to chance you at this point. UCLA only uses 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation and you get extra Honors points for AP and IB courses taken during this time.

Come back at the end of Junior year with your real stats and I am sure posters are willing to chance you. Just make sure your parents are ok with spending $260K for 4 years at UCLA especially if you have UW as an in-state option for CS.

CS at UCLA had a 8.2% acceptance rate with an average SAT of 1550 for 2018 admissions.

CS at UCLA should be considered a reach due to being much more popular than its capacity.
