White, Male, Jewish, North Jersey Public High School. Class of 2008.

Statistics:
SATs (Projected): 2160 or so cumulative. 740 reading, 640 math, 760 writing.
PSATs: 210 (78 writing, 74 reading, 58 math)
ACT (projected): 33.
GPA: 3.8 weighted. Honors and AP classes (five by graduation in the APs, World History, Spanish Language, English Language, US History, English Literature) in everything but math and two years of science (physics and senior year...I'm taking a difficult anatomy class next year.) I got a C- sophomore year in Chem Honors and in Art II.

Extracurriculars:
Gay-Straight Alliance Founder and President, Lit Mag EIC, Student Newspaper Editor and Staff Writer, Drama Club (active member, I've been in 5 productions so far), NSHS officer, Spanish Club. Possibly NHS and Peer Leadership, not sure yet.
I'm a very, very good writer (shameless self-promotion, huh?) and love to learn.

What are my chances at?:
University of Chicago (1st choice, ED):
Haverford College (2nd choice)
Macalester College
Carnegie-Mellon University
Goucher College
Washington University at St. Louis
Northwestern University
CUNY Brooklyn or CUNY Hunter
Clark University
Wesleyan University
Rutgers University

Not that I'm going to apply to all of these.

You should move this to the chances thread to get good responses.

bump. I want some responses!

Since you are a strong writer and love to learn, U Chicago is an excellent fit, so I'm glad it's your first choice. It would be a reach, but you could add Swarthmore to the list. You'll probably get a number of acceptances with this list, with Clark and Rutgers as safeties (I don't know anything about the CUNYs).
Wash U and Northwestern have a more preprofessional flavor than you may like.

Yeah...Swarthmore would be a reach, though I'd probably love it there and do well there. To be a white upper middle-class Northeasterner and go to Swarthmore, you need to have taken pretty much all honors/AP classes and have a close to perfect GPA. It's in my reach range, I guess, but I still wouldn't even mail in my application in less I got rejected from University of Chicago.

I suppose that you're right about WUSTL and Northwestern. They're very pre-professional, while I want more of an academic atmosphere like you'd get from University of Chicago or Haverford. Wesleyan and Carleton are probably not on the list, FYI...there's an under 50% chance I'd apply to Wesleyan, Carleton maybe a little bit higher, but in the same chance range. Goucher, Rutgers, and Clark are definite safeties, particularly as an NJ resident. The reason a CUNY is on the list is that if I didn't get into say, University of Chicago or Haverford is that I might want to commute for a semester and then re-apply for the second semester of my freshman year. If WUSTL and Northwestern are out, Carnegie-Mellon might as well go. The streamlined list:

University of Chicago
Haverford
Swarthmore
Macalester
Clark
Rutgers
Goucher

Possibilities:
Carleton
CUNY
Carnegie-Mellon
Northwestern
Wesleyan

UChic: match
NU: match
Rutgers: safety
WUStL: match

I'd shoot for a 2200+ if I were you.

I could probably get a 2200+. But, if I do extraordinarily well on the ACTs (they're more my flavor) I might just put that, SAT IIs, and APs down on my application. Does anyone want to comment on my chances at Haverford, Macalester, Carleton, Wesleyan, Clark, Goucher, Carnegie-Mellon? I think I'd get into one of my top two choices (Haverford and UChicago), but I might dash Clark off the list, since the more I read about it, the less appealing it seems.

WELL, here's how I look at it:

University of Chicago-Match.
Haverford-High Match.
Macalester-Safe Match (considering the other kids from my school who've gone there recently have less of a strong class schedule, ECs, etc. than me)
Goucher-Safety.
Swarthmore-Reach.
Rutgers-High Safety (for Rutgers College, where I'd be applying...)
Clark-Safety.
Carleton-Match/High Match (probably not applying...)
Wesleyan-Match/High Match (probably not applying...)
Northwestern-High Match.
Washington University at St. Louis-Low Reach (not that I really want to go there.)
Carnegie-Mellon University-Match (not that I really want to go there.)
Marlboro-Safety.

Agree/disagree?
