So I am going to be an incoming senior in high school and I was wondering anyone can tell me if I have a chance to get into Barnard

Next year I will be Editor-in-Chief for my school newspaper
so far I have a 3.7 GPA —unweighted
WORST PART OF MY APPLICATION I GOT 2 C’s in my sophmore yr…both
in Spanish 3…and and on more thing…I recieved a D first semester in AP Bio
thus with much consideration a dropped it and took it in Junior yr…and I recieved 2 A’s…
AP’s I have taken…AP english -A/A AP History A/A AP Computer Sci. A/A
AP Bio A/A…those are all for junior yr

I did really well in junior yr --getting 4.0’s both semesters
BUT!!! I DID HORRIBLE IN 10th grade
thats how my GPA went down…first semester of soph. yr I got a horrible
3.3— I GOT A B IN PE!!!
and then second semester I GOT a HORRIBLE 3.5
but I was wondering would they consider how I got back on track in junior yr?
I received a 5 in AP Bio and a 5 in AP History…I dont know what I got in english yet
I developed my own club in school and extended that as an organization outside of school…it is called “PROJECT HOPE” and what we do is we helped those living in poverty and children in foster care whom have physical deformations recieve help from doctors ( such as surgery or mental treatments)

Im also In my schools Debate team - but only for senior yr ( next yr) and I am in my schools yearbook committe and I also have an intership at a local newspaper and I currently have an intership with a UCLA linguistics prof.
and volunteer at shelters
SO DO I HAVE ANY CHANCE I KNOW I SCREWED UP MY SOPH YR…
oh
my SAT’s 2100…but Im taking it again and Im aiming for a higher score–
urggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
PLEASE TELL ME WAT U GUYS THINk

You think so....im still a bit iffy, do you think I should do anything else before applying...and is it true that people have a better chance to get in applying ed ? oh and do you know if you have to have an interview...If
I do I think the my nerves will ruin my chances
thanks for replying mardad!!

OH! and one last question..is my GPA too low? what gpa's do they usually accept?

Moonbright, you can't get in if you don't apply. Barnard accepts some students who have less-than-perfect high school records -- they really do look at the whole person.

Focus on the positives, not the negatives, in your application. It doesn't matter what grade you have in the first semester of AP Bio if you have A's in your junior year and a 5 on the exam.

You should definitely write about the Project Hope organization on your app - it is the kind of thing that makes you look special.

Don't apply ED if you aren't absolutely sure that Barnard is your top choice and/or if you need financial aid.

Well I know for sure Barnard is my first choice, I use to live in NY when I was young and my mom would always take me to around the "Barnard area"
And because i am the last child to go to collge, financial aid is not so imperative. So to sum it all up...Barnard is definatly my first choice, well I guess I still need to improve my SAT score

My daughter had 28 ACT; GPA 4.1 (weighted) - class rank within top 5 of a class of 160. SATs were 1930, but she didn't submit them -- however, Barnard got them anyway, possibly from her high school transcript- but I don't know whether they were considered for admission. D. is white, from Calif. public arts magnet school.

I think that's pretty much the low end for test scores, but I'm posting it to illustrate the point that stats aren't everything. My d. has extensive training in dance & studied abroad in Russia during high school -- now that I can see the bios of many kids that have been admitted it is easy to see (in hindsight) why she got in. Barnard likes dancers. Barnard likes students who have taken initiative. Barnard likes variety - international living experience is a plus. Russian language study is a plus. I am sure there are many other things that Barnard likes as well -- but the point is that the academic threshhold for admission to Barnard is high, but not impossibly high -- once past that, I think it is most important to emphasize personal qualities, and I think things that show leadership and initiative are probably exceptionally valued.

That's why I honed in on the "Project Hope" thing -- it stood out to me as being something special. Yearbook, debate, volunteering at homeless shelters are all the sort of EC's that are on everyone else's app --you should list them of course, but they won't get you in. Many kids start clubs that don't go anywhere -- so starting a high school club by itself doesn't mean much.

But your club seems to have gone farther, and it also seems geared to helping a specific niche that is overlooked. Your internships also show that you have stretched your boundaries beyond the gates of your high school.

Just a note: if your internship with the UCLA linguistics prof indicates a specific interest in studying linguistics, you need to know that neither Columbia or Barnard currently offers a linguistics major. On the "why Barnard" part of the application, my d. wrote that she is interested in studying linguistics and international relations -- Barnard doesn't offer an IR major either. Oops. (Funny the things you discover AFTER you enroll...... I highly recommend reading and studying the course catalog before applying - ESPECIALLY before applying ED).

Moonbright, I want to add one more thing: Barnard welcomes the submission of supplemental material. That means that anything you feel needs explaining, can be explained. Anything you feel needs highlighting can be supported with extra submissions.

Don't over do it --but do use that opportunity.
