I’d like to see the proof of that. Last I checked, the difference between OOS and IS is only 4 or 5 percentage points. I don’t know if I want to call that “much more”. Berkeley doesn’t take many OOS but there aren’t that many OOS applicants either. So that sorta evens out. But if you meant the quality of applicant pool is much higher, then I’d like to see the proof of that also. I don’t believe Berkeley OOS pool is somehow at the level of HYPS. If anything, Berkeley is more prestigious in CA than in the rest of the state (OOS; outside the US is considered international, not OOS).

obviously you are talented academically.

but so is everybody else applying to these top notch schools. so you really can’t take it personally if you don’t get into all of these reach schools.

(When it comes down to it… applying to any ivy or ivy like school is just a crapshoot)

So. here are some words of advice.
- get some safeties. even if your dream is to attend stanford, your mind will be at ease knowing that if all else fails, you will be in college SOMEWHERE.

Stand out in your essay. Its the only thing that gives you an opportunity to speak for yourself… and set you apart from John Smith who has the same exact profile as you.

Try not to focus on the name of the school. Depending on your work ethic, you will get a good education wherever you go. (you could go to harvard, be last in your class, and not get any job offers when you graduate. You could also go to NYU, be in the top 10%, and have a dozen offers.)

All of these schools you named are incredibly different. Have you visited MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and all of those ivys? Make sure you do. Because you should really think about what kind of college environment you want. For example, UC Berkeley is GIGANTIC… Do you really want to be a small fish in a big ocean? Personally, I wouldn’t. (Also… the political environment of Berkeley is rather… FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR left. But I dont know if thats a deal-breaker for you :P) Also, as a science/math geek myself, I dreamed of going to MIT until I went on a tour and realized people are awkward and socially inept.

(wow. I just realized the date that this message board started… I’m a bit late!)

so where did you end up going? XD
