My chances of getting into Cornell Engineering?

Hello,

I'm a female senior at a New Jersey public school planning on applying to Cornell's College of Engineering--early decision. I'm looking for some input as to my likelihood of being accepted.

Some information about me:

In regards to my family, I am a first generation Asian American. I am fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

Academically, I am ranked sixth out of 281 students with a GPA of approximately 4.6 out of 5.0. I have taken all honors/AP classes throughout my high school life.

Senior classes:
AP English, AP Spanish, AP Physics, AP Government and Politics, AP Calculus BC, Honors College Preparatory Accounting

I took the AP US History Exam in my junior year and received a 5

SAT Scores
SAT I: 780 Critical Reading, 770 Math, 800 Writing
SAT II: 800 Math II, 740 US History, I will be taking Chemistry in October.

Extracurriculars:

Volunteer Service:
I have committed myself solely to the American Cancer Society. I have earned upwards of 150 hours of community service and have also raised several thousand dollars in various cancer fundraising events.

Outside of school, I commit myself mainly to piano. I have played for fourteen years, since the age of three. I participate in competitions and recitals held by the Piano Teachers Society of America (PTSA) Association and have performed in Carnegie Hall twice. Last year, I broke the PTSA Carnegie Hall competition record by passing my auditions in six categories: 2 Piano solos, one vocal solo, art, poetry, and pop piano.

During my summers, I have been invited to and attended Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth Summer Programs and have taken 3-week intensive classes in Crafting the Essay, Philosophy of the Mind, and Cryptology at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.

====================================

Essentially, I am riding on the fact that I am a female student aspiring to become an engineer. I am well-rounded and work hard. Cornell Engineering is my first choice, and I plan on applying to the College of Arts and Sciences as an alternative choice. What do you think are my chances of being accepted?

i would say you have a decent chance. we’re in the same boat :] im applying to engineering too.

Female engineer with above average stats? You’re in.

i think you have a great chance of being accepted. like aseyelum said, female with perfect SAT’s, GPA, solid EC’s… you’re not going to be overlooked, that’s for sure.

Thanks so much, guys–I’ve been stressing about this ever since June.

If you do well on the SAT2 Chemistry, I would say you have a highly likely chance of getting in, especially since you are applying ED.

Chance me back? : )

easy in, imo

you shouldn’t even bother doing ED

I second ^. Don’t do ED

If you’ve got good teacher recommendations I’d say you have a good chance at HYPS

send in a music supplement too

Just out of curiosity, why shouldn’t I apply ED? Would admissions is probably be focusing on my ECs more than my grades?

i don’t think ED is necessary, unless cornell is the top choice by far. because with your stats, harvard isn’t that much of a long shot, i don’t think. HYPSM is definitely within your range i think.

Cornell’s my top choice because it’s a fantastic engineering school on the east coast. Stanford and Caltech are too far away from home, and after visiting, MIT does appeal to me. Cornell, on the other hand, struck me as my ideal college setting.

Hey, if you want to secure your chances further and Cornell is your number #1, all the more reason to do ED!

Fall of 2010 35.5% : 731 women of the 2060 who Applied to Engineering were admitted.

Good Luck :)

aw lol, i really like cornell’s setting too. i’m going to be EDing at cornell ;D however, my stats are lower than yours.

i’d say you have a really really good chance at getting into cornell if that’s where you want to go =]

i think you’re in. I’m a white male with lower stats than you that is now attending. You could look at HYP, but their engineering program isn’t at the level Cornell’s is.

The stats that richs73cas posted are for overall admissions too. The ED specific stat for women admitted to engineering is closer to 50% or more.
