My chances of getting into Phillips Academy

Hi this is my first time using this site but I’ve read a lot of the other post and no one has quiet answered my question. I currently attend a rigorous all girls school where I make better then average grades and maintain an A average but I am not the top of my grade. I am also involved in multiple school groups and I am in the percussion section in my high school band and I also do service with a children museum. I scored in the 89 percentile on the PSAT which is what worries me because I know the average is 93 and I want to know if that will still be good enough. I am also applying for the 11th grade and this would be my first time applying. Do you guys think I still have a chance? I know I received great recommendations and the women I interviewed with was very nice and we talked for a long time and also talked with my mother for quiet sometime. She also told me that being from Texas and having a Nigerian mother boosted my chance I didn’t quiet understand what she meant but I hoped it does help. I also wanted to know if someone could tell me how to send in my PSAT score do I mail it in or is there somewhere on the online application to attach it? If you guys could give me and honest opinion about what you think that would be great I really want to get in and it would be a dream of mine if I did get in. Thank you for your replies!

One correction I just received the paper copy of my PSAT today and realized that I am actually in the 84th percentile but I’m still waiting for anyone to chance me I’m open to any thoughts or ideas.

Julie0635: based on the limited information you provided it sounds like PA would be a long shot. Your PSAT is well below the average. Further, I don’t see any strong extracurriculars.

By the way, you must request your scores be sent. You don’t send them yourself . And yes, being from Texas or any other state that offers some geographical diversity does help as long as the rest of the applicants package is competitive. Being Nigerian and (I assume ) black would also potentially make you a diversity candidate. I am curious why you have not applied to other schools more in line with your grades and scores?

Well for me I guess boarding school was something I never really thought about till the summer. Also being that I was already part way through high school I just thought if I want it I might as well just shoot for it and see what happens. Maybe that’s too unrealistic but all a girl can do is try. Thank you for your quick reply @Center

It can’t hurt to try of course and your application may be far more dimensional than that which you have disclosed here. Either way, good luck .

@Julie0635

Your PSAT is not out of range and being from Texas + being part Nigerian is a definite hook (URM). Though PA will be a reach, you are a strong applicant. Good luck and keep chasing your dreams and working hard.

Thank you for the response @LaxPrep it means a lot to me :slight_smile:

I think you have a wonderful chance, I’m in the process of applying myself and your SSAT score percentiles seem fine! I hope you get in!
