My Chances

I know that the odds of me getting accepted into the Naval (or any other for that matter) Academy is extremely slim, but from what I have now, what do you think I would need to improve my chances

GPA- 3.21 (last updated in June of '09, should be around a 3.3, hopefully higher.
Rank- Third fifth of around 530
Sports- Baseball, Football, Hockey, though I did not play through school, only in outside leagues.
Jewish
SATs- 1580 (Horrible in my eyes. Taking them again in ?June, expecting no lower than a 1900. This time, maybe I will actually be able to sleep more than 4 hours.) Math- 620 (hoping to get a 700, and Critical reading- 470 (hoping for >550.
ACT- 25 Composite, 27 on the Math/Reading

I have been a camp counselor for 2 years.

I am in great shape (ran the 1.5 mile in less than 9 minutes at a slow pace)

Unfortunately I have not been able to attend the summer seminars due to financial reasons, being unable to get to Maryland, and other personal reasons.

So I know that my best chance of being accepted is if my application falls into the accepted pile accidentally, but what do you think?

Bump…

On the basis of your stats and info to date, in all candor, unless your last name’s McCain …or something simlar or you’re a person representative of the USNA’s special needs categories, your profile is not in line at present. Keep working and striving. Only good will come from continued best effort on your behalf. Make sure you make and pursue additional, attractive alternative plans, and give it a go. Look too @ ROTC and perhaps especially at the military-type schools and programs …VMI, Citadel, Va Tech, Texas A&M, the Maritime academies, etc. Also, perhaps look closely at USCGA and USMMA. The former does not require a competitive nomination, and both are generally less competitive for entry.

You’d probably be fine in competing once @ USNA, but getting in is so much more challenging for virtually all candidates.

Thanks WhistlePig. Hopefully my 4th MP grades will bring me up to at least a 3.5. It just sucks that this is my last marking period, and I have to apply for the nominations before I get my first marking period grades next year.

I’ll just keep my fingers crossed, hope for the best, and hopefully everything works out. I just wished the world worked like that.

You’re welcome. Don’t give up the dream. Also, if it does not work out, go to another school and reapply …w/ great performance and persistence, your early HS struggles will become history. Definitely apply though now and later, should your first shot miss the mark.

One great positive is your path …you’re showing great motivation and progress. That carries real weight in the process.

Also, remember this …your objective should be focused on a career in the USN and there are various ways to skin that kitty! Keep running strong, as you are, and keep us posted.

Focus on getting your grades up, which will help with your class rank as well [class rank factors more into score than gpa].

If you can get a tutor, work on the SATs- take practice exams over the summer and work on your week areas. Aim at a math score mid-600 range and verbal 600+ to be competetive.

If you are a runner, get a competetive run time nailed down and contact the track coach- see if there is any interest there.

Look into the other service academies as WP suggested- right now, USNA is the most competetive in terms of admission, so your chances might be better at the other academies.
