Twenty-four hours ago, my heart was beating with joy and excitement as I watch the airplane schedule counting down minute by minute, fantasizing about how elementary schools are like in America and finally seeing people with different hair and eye colors that I had only seen in magazines. As my dad and I jogged around the neighborhood to explore our new environment, we suddenly realized we were lost. Lost in a completely strange new world. I was terrified. Feeling my body trembling from the inside, my mind went blank. Because we did not know any English, our only option was to find out own way out of the maze. As we helplessly looked for our way, we saw many people that could help, however we lacked the skills to communicate. I told myself that I would never let a moment of helplessness happen again just because I couldnt speak in the way people understand.
Aiming to achieve this goal in life, I worked tirelessly. Every day during recess time, I brought out my notebook to review the notes that I took about the basics of English. Watching the kids run around, laughing and having fun; a slight taste of bitterness and jealousy ran through my heart, but only for a fraction of a second. I knew that I was not like the other children; to be like them I would have to work hard to catch up, to learn English. As the days passed by, my English skills grew dramatically. Finally in the end, all the hard work paid off. I was awarded with the Presidents Education Awards Programs Outstanding Academic Achievement Award when I graduate in sixth grade.
My need for improvement did not stop there. While I was in middles school, I realized that I was the only member in the family that has a better understanding of English. I took on the responsibility of translating all letters and sometimes even our neighbors. Though it was a very tough job to manage, I loved it; the joy of watching others coming from confusion to understanding as I translate to them is the best accomplishment that money cant buy. Having to handle the one of most important tasks in the family, I learned to be meticulous about doing things, and learn undertake responsibility usually unknown to teenagers.
