My Common App Essay

Hey all.

I know there is already a featured post on this, but I just have a quick personal question of my own.
My common app essay is one page, barely. I would say it fills about 7/9ths of the page, single spaced. However, according to the word count, it is very long (if we consider that 500 is the word limit). Even though I went over with the words, would my essay still be fine at one page?
Also, a supplemental essay, which is recommended at 500 words, is a little bit over. However, it only fits about a half to three quarters of the page. The font size for both essays is 11.
Basically, in terms of words, my essays are longer than average, but they both still fit within one page, and even with space to spare. Would that be considered OK?

thanks!

bump, can anyone help? :(

dude, its alright… the common app essay has no word limit so going over the 500 limit, which you’ve set out for urself, and isn’t a real thing, cuz iv seen 1000 word essays take people to yale and have yale tell them they were impressed by it. One page is quite alright, i’m actually struggling to keep mine to a page, i’ve shrunk the font and margin a little to make it work, cuz mine’s like 1050 words or something… So, as far as the common app essay’s length is concerned, DONT SWEAT IT… Its alright to have an essay thats a page long with more than 500 words…

The supplemental essay… I think if its a little bit over, like 50 words, then it shouldn’t matter… But if we’re talking like a 150 word difference, then you should sum it up. I applied to brown last year, and they wanted a 500 word essay. I wrote a nearly 600 word essay and i was still waitlisted.
Point is, they wont exactly sit down and start to make a fuss if you put in a few extra words, its practically a mad-house when they’re going through apps, they’re not going to make the effort of counting and taxing u for going ‘a little over’ the word limit. but see to it that the ‘a little over’ is indeed a little…

Thanks, you made me feel much better, I never know just how admissions officers would react to this kind of thing but after reading your post, I realized they are humans (not aliens) just like the rest of us.

glad i cud help =)
