My Common App essays suck!

Hey guys, does anyone have any tips for making my essays better? My English teacher proofread one of them and she said it was good, but I feel as though I have a good amount of room for improvement. Thanks

This is such a general question. Here are a few thoughts:

  • Don’t use an overdone topic. Skip dying pets & grandparents, sports injuries, and service trips.
  • Does it reveal something about your personality that the rest of the app doesn’t?
  • Would you want an admissions officer to tag you with your topic as shorthand (oh, yes, this is the left handed rodeo barrel racer is better than this is the kid who cuts and thinks they are over it) during meetings when they discuss applicants? (You’d prefer that it not be something boring or negative).
  • Is the essay overall about you and conversational in tone? Does it show (stories, few generalizations)?
  • Don’t worry about giving your truest answer to a prompt if it is too personal or negative. There are lots of aspects to every person. Find one that makes them want you on campus. The best essay can turn in a small event or personality trait.
  • Have a trusted adult read your final product (sounds like you are already on the right track with this).
