Hey guys, so I’ve been struggling to find a topic to write about and I came up with a topic that’s deeply personal to me - my speech problems, and how they’ve shaped me as who I am today
I don’t know whether colleges would look fondly on speech problems though if they want top-notch highly professional students
I also don’t know how personal one should go with these essays - would going in depth about your emotions help or hinder?
I was going to write about a random, seemingly ordinary topic and turn it into a quirky interpretation but I don’t know if it’s truly me, and whether I’ll come across as trying too hard
Also, I found that a lot of college essay exemplars are written in a novel-like style, but I’m more comfortable with just confessing my thoughts, feelings about a particular event or idea
I’d very much appreciate it if anyone could help me clarify any of these questions
Thanks in advance
It’s worth making a draft and seeing how it turns out. Colleges won’t discriminate against you for something like a speech impediment. Honesty is good, but remember, the focus of your essay should be on how things have shaped you into who you are and how they make you the kind of person that will fit in on their college campus.
Thanks so much guys, I wrote out a draft but I’m feeling iffy about it Like it might be a bit too emotional/personal,
I’m going to keep this draft and test out other ideas and see which one i like better,
Thanks again for your input c:
There is a balancing act between too much information/treating the essay like therapy (not good), and showing your personality and personal growth story (good). A little self deprecating humor can work, and not succeeding at everything is okay. Your basic goal is to make them say, “I would like a person with these personal qualities on our campus”.
Alright thanks that helps a lot … I think I’ll cut out more of the parts where I literally showcase my suffering, talking about crying, etc … it still feels risky for some reason though :c but maybe risky is good … I’ll think about it, thanks again!
The best advice I’ve ever seen on the topic of college essays came from the adcom at a school we toured.
"Give us a reason to say yes!!!
That’s it. It’s not confession, therapy, or an audition for reality TV. It’s part of your college application, designed to give them that reason to accept your application. Every word you write should have that ultimate goal in mind.
