My dad got laid off today! Help please!

I was accepted Early Decision 1 into Tufts. They declined my financial aid application. However now my financial situation has changed. What should I do? What is probobly going to happen?

I'm also applying for needbased scholarships which require the CSS profile. Can I edit my CSS profile to reflect the change in my financial situation?

i'm very sorry for your family!! maybe you need to talk to Tufts's financial department, they will probably help you!!!

You need to talk right away with the FinAid department at Tufts. And don't settle for someone telling you they're "not sure" or "don't know". Someone there can answer your specific questions and (hopefully) allow you to file a change of circumstances or amend your FinAid application.

The only thing you can amend on the Profile is the question about the amount your family might earn in 2009, and their potential contribution to your college expenses.

The other information is about your family's income from 2008...and assets. Those haven't changed.

I do agree you need to contact Tufts immediately. You need to explain your family's new financial situation. You will need to be able to document in writing your dad's job layoff. Keep in mind that if he received a severance package, they will expect to know about that as well.

Good luck. I hope something works out for you. Talk to the folks directly at Tufts. They accepted you ED...seems like they would at least try to help you.

If my dad gets severence for year, does that mean that Tufts still will not help me?

A called Tufts and they said something vague about submitting an appeal in writing...

In the place on CSS profile that says "Enter the amount of income parent 1 expects to earn from work in 2009." If my dad will be collecting severence, does that count?

They may very well consider the severance pay because that means your father gets another year's worth of salary. As far as the appeal, write out how your circumstances have changed from the information that was submitted. If you want to attend Tufts rather than be released from your ED tell them that.

I'm sure the knowledgable Thumper will post again but I would say yes re: severance. That would be income in 2009. Generally speaking the Financial Aid for 2009/2010 is based on income from 2008 so they may not consider an appeal but as was previously posted you should appeal, write a letter, etc.
I don't know specifically about Tufts but I helped a parent in a similar situation for a public school last year and they had specific rules..The income from 2007 counted for 08/09 Financial Aid and they would let the student fill out a change of circumstances form only after the parent had been unemployed/laid off for six months.
Check with Tufts directly....

I would think that a severance package would be considered as income during the 2009 year...if one is received. I am not sure how colleges consider these situations. The best thing is to contact the college and ask THEM. When you tell them your situation, they will ask for the appropriate documentation. You just need to be honest with them.

I'm hoping your dad DID receive a years' severance pay. That would be wonderful...and gives him time to secure another job.

I have heard from others that if there is severance, the college does consider this. Think of it this way...your dad got that severance package for the year...and he just might get a job in addition to that. Keeping my fingers crossed that this happens for your.

In the meantime, contact Tufts.

I am sorry that this has happened to your dad.

If your father works for a large company is "severance" is in the form of salary continuance, where he will be paid probably on the same pay cycle, just like he was working except he just doesn't show off to the office. If given the option, he should probably take the distibution, so that he is paid like pay periods over the course of the year vs. taking a lum sum distribution where he gets all of his money at once.

As Thumper said, your FA package for this year, is based on your 2008 income so I don't see your package changing much. If your dad is getting severance/salary continuance, I do not see your package changing much next year either because on paper he is still has the same income he had when he had a job. You will probably not receive need based FA at any other school until approximately your junior year, which will be based on your parents 2010 income.

if this is going to be a problem, your best bet would be to explain it to the FA office at Tufts and ask to be released. The financially feasible option for you may just be your state university, where you can go in-state for considerably less than the ~ 50k full freight your family would have to pay for you to attend Tufts.

hope this helps.

All the best.

When my husband lost his job at the beginning of last year we appealed shortly after we received my son's financial aid package. THe situation was different, because he was not ED, so we appealed in April when my husband had already been out of work for 4 months

THe school used "professional judgement" to change my son's SAR, the numbers then reflected the expected 2008 income not the 2007 income. This lowered our EFC considerably (qualifying us for Federal aid)

However:

We were asked how much the severance package was, and this amount was included

No funds for this semester were released until we sent copies of our 2008 tax forms to verify that our income had remained at that lower level.

SO, basically, it is worth it to appeal, but if your father is getting a full year severence package I suspect not much can be done.
