My dad was recently given his two week notice at his job, and he has 8 weeks vacation time saved up so he will not be technically unemployed until about 2 months from now. Must I wait until then to edit my FAFSA (because by then school will have almost started) and/or can I appeal for more money/aid now even though he is not actually unemployed yet? Also if anyone knows I was wondering how being unemployed affects your EFC, and aid from college/the government, will I be offered more free money or does that vary depending on the college? (I'm attending University of Texas, which is not exactly famous for their money giveaways XD) Thank you!

I would amend your FAFSA now and contact the school immediately. There is no guarantee you will get more, but it is always wise to try.

The FAFSA is based on your family’s earnings and savings from 2008. There is nothing to amend right now. You can’t change 2008 figures for something that happened in 2009.

What you can do right now is contact your Fin Aid office and see what they can do. Your Dad’s vacation pay and any unemployment he receives will count as income in 2009. So there may not be an adjustment.

Sorry about what has happened to your Dad!

The FAFSA now has a question for displaced worker, which can be amended and should be immediately.

It is June 2009 and his father has two months of vacation pay and then unemployment checks. They are not going to change his 2009 award. 2010 yes if his father is still out of work.

I just went through this.

That depends entirely upon the school’s individual policies and the FAO that you are talking to.

Scottaa, the FAFSA CANNOT be amended. Students MUST put the 2008 figures on the FAFSA. There is absolutely no leeway on this.

If a student feels he has a special circumstance that warrants consideration, this is done separately from the FAFSA. Each school has its own method of applying for consideration. Check the school’s website.

In the OP’s case, the aid will most likely not be adjusted right now because it is so recent. However, it may be - each school is different. Some will make the adjustment now, others will make the student wait until a certain amount of time after the job loss (since a new job is possible). Please talk to your aid office for instructions.

Not the figures. I’m talking about the employment status.

If you are talking about dislocated worker, remember that the only thing this does is allow the use of Simplified Needs or Auto 0 formulas without meeting 1040A/EZ or federal means tested benefits criteria. The family still has to have agi of $50k or less for simplified needs (which only ignores assets - nothing else) and under $30k for auto 0.

But still provides solid grounds for appeal depending upon the individual school.
