My daughter is concerned

She is trying to decide between UR and another good program. My daughter is VERY liberal in her views and politics and comes for a pretty low middle class upbringing. As much as she loves what she has seen so far, she has real concerns about fitting in.

She is concerned about what she has been told is a conservative southern school with the vast majority of the student body coming from affluent households.

Are any CURRENT students on this message board who can speak to their experiences?

Thanks!

Your daughter has no reason to be concerned. I am pretty moderate in my political beliefs, and have observed that political views of students tend to be much more liberal than conservative. While the stereotype of the school is that all the students come from wealthy families, to be honest, that’s a load of crap. While a portion of students are pretty well off, there’s also a huge chunk that don’t come from that background, including myself, and I’ve never seen it as an issue. I mean, my logic also is that I have no reason to be bothered by it when I get great financial aid and those kids all have to pay out of pocket, haha.

Thanks, Kellie. I appreciate your thoughts. Anyone else?

My very liberal daughter from a middle class upbringing will be attending in the Fall!

I agree with Kellie! I’m pretty liberal in my political beliefs, and I think that a large, vocal majority of the student body is as well. In terms of socioeconomic status, I’m not from a wealthy background, but, on the most part, I don’t feel like an outsider here.

Thanks every one! Nice to know there are folks like you on campus!!!
