My EFC is 5,000 dollars. Is this high? What? I don't know what this is (well, I do)...is it like, my family is expected to pay 5,000 dollars of my tuition a year?

Yes, you are correct.

The range is from $0 to ~$50,000 so it's closer to the low side, but one's viewpoint depends on the COA (cost of attendance).

Actually the range is more like $0 to $99,000. We have had EFCs range from $69,000 to $59,000 due to aggressive college savings accounts.

One's viewpoint also depends on one's income and savings history, but $5000 seems like a lovely expected contribution.

Lovely, perhaps, but it doesn't necessarily mean someone will make up the difference.

FYI: Just because you have an EFC of $5,000 doesn't mean the school will have enough aid to bring your cost down to $5,000.

so who makes up the difference then?

you're supposed to, with additional loans and scholarships.
