My favorite book is...

Harry Potter all the way! Out of the HP books, probably Goblet of Fire.

^Nah man, The Half-Blood Prince is #1.

I read them so long ago I can’t remember which I enjoyed most, but now by the plot I think I found the Philosopher’s Stone, the Half-Blood Prince, and the Deathly Hallows the most.

I’ve never read a Harry Potter book. Cue shunning.

^shun
Is that just so that you can be one of the few who hasn’t? There’s really no reason not to read at least a few. They’re fast-paced, the first couple are fairly short, and you’ll know what they hype is about (even if you don’t agree with it, you’ll know it).

^^ lol I haven’t either. The movies haven’t particularly made me want to read them any more than I did before.

Yeah by now I can knockout each of them in a day or a couple days.

^^You don’t feel any obligation as a regular member of society to read them? Heck, I felt that way about Twilight, and those books aren’t even good.

haha not really. I mean, they are very good children’s books (or must be), but I guess I don’t see them as a must read really.

My parents never allowed me to read the Harry Potter books when I was younger since they have never liked witchcraft and didn’t neccesaraly wanted me to read anything on the topic. They would let me now, but I just don’t feel as compelled to read them as I would a higher level book. Plus, I’ve always been more of a sci fi person than a fantasy person.

Just out of curriosity, what did everyone read in elementary school?

Khaled Hosseini, amaaaaazing!

In a sort of rough order by grade, I read: (and I’ve read more, I just can’t remember)

Charlotte’s Web
The Good Dog

Tom Sawyer
Harry Potter- 1, 2, 3

The Chronicles of Narnia- all
Harry Potter- 4, 5
Roughing It
Jacob Have I Loved
A Series of Unfortunate Events- like 7 of them

A Wrinkle in Time
Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes
Trouble Don’t Last
Fast Food Nation
Percy Jackson and the Olympians- first 3 ( i read the others when they came out)
The Thief Lord
The Call of the Wild
Hoot
Grayson
The Teacher’s Funeral
A Series of Unfortunate Events- the rest of them
Robinson Crusoe
Inkheart
The Odyssey (Lombardi Translation)- one of my favorites
Treasure Island
Lord of the Flies
Pride and Prejudice

I can’t remember the others or if I read them in 5th or middle school

^A Wrinkle in Time = <3!

I see no one had The End of the Beginning: Being the Adventures of a Small Snail (and an Even Smaller Ant) as their favorite book except me.

Ok, I need a light (but not trashy) novel, maybe some kind of action/thriller thing (but not horror). Something like Day of the Jackal, if you’ve read that. I need something to read for 20-30 minutes at a time before going to sleep.

Thanks.

The Decameron - it has 100 Short Stories, one of which involves a guy pretending to be deaf so he can have sex with nuns

Any particular translation you have in mind?

(btw - the book must be in the UCLA library)

Just go for the newest one, otherwise it will be all Chaucery

The one I read was translated by Mark Musa and Peter Bondanella and it was decent (and it’s in Brown’s library fwiw)

OK, UCLA has several copies of that translation.

For most classics, get a Barnes and Noble Classics Series book because theyre extremely cheap and very good…But for ones that go through serious translation, try to pick out the best one, it makes the experience better. Books like the Odyssey, Iliad, other ancient works, The Count of Monte Cristo, etc.

Of Mice and Men.
Hands down.
