Hey guys, I'm planning on applying to NYU HEOP and it's probably my first choice school. What chances do you guys think I have of gaining admission into NYU's HEOP program?

NYU School: Steinhardt's Communications program

Residence: NYC

High School: not that great of a school, but it has sent several HEOP students to NYU, atleast 3 got in last year and 1 C-step student.

Ethnicity: Puerto Rican (URM)

Gender: Male

GPA: 89.05% unweighted (math is my weakness so it drags my average slightly down, I really wish my GPA was higher, but I have to work with what I have)

Rank: 58/448 top 12%-ish?

SATS: 1610 superscore. (probably won't send, what do you guys think?)

SAT 2s: 630 US History, 530 Literature (please be aware that I could EASILY hit 600+ on this exam if I take it again. I took the USH one first and was sooo tired and didn't really feel like reading excerpts and stuff, so yeah. PLUS, I studied ZERO for Lit, I studied for USH though.)

ACT (these are a bit better): October: 25 - low 1700s equivalent to SATs --- December: ? taking it tomorrow morning, mostly because I'm applying to Vassar and I want to really raise them.

Courseload: Junior Year: AP English Language-3, AP US History-4, Honors Chemistry, Journalism, Italian, Intermediate Strings, Trigonometry. Senior Year: AP Government, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, and ANOTHER Science- Biology (not AP,) Advanced Strings, and Advanced Italian. I did NOT have Honors my freshman and sophomore year but I WAS recommended my freshman year and finally fully recommended my sophomore year. I think my counselor addresses my attempt to have rigor in my courses. My teachers really started to realize that I DID NOT belong in regular classes.

Awards: REACH Scholar Award - This is a special organization in partnership with certain high schools in the NYC area that award students with money and AP prep for achieving a 3 or higher on AP exams. They have this big ceremony and what not and award us a check and this "Scholar" title. Honor Roll for four years making my way up from Bronze to Silver honor rolls. NYSSMA Silver Award with my String Orchestra held at NYU which I was first chair of the cello section. It's apparently rare for a group of students who have only been playing for 2 years to win a Silver on their first try so :)

Extra Currics/Leadership roles: School Newspaper: Editor-in-Chief; National English Honor Society: Vice President; Tri-M Music Honor Society: Vice-President Candidate,Member; Co-President of Quill & Scroll: Journalism Honor Society; String Orchestra: Secretary, Cello for 3 years and First-Chair. This would be the second instrument I've learned to play in HS, I learned Guitar my freshman year; Member of National Honor Society.

Services/Work Experience: The bulk of my community service hours derives from honor societies, especially NHS. I've done community service with NHS such as city walks and holding penny drives, food drives, and toys for tots. I conduct a Christmas card-making event with NEHS to provide cards for children in nearby hospitals. My Freshman year I donated to an animal shelter to help stray animals living on the streets by supplying them with---well, supplies, this gave me a total of 10 hours of community service hours. And finally, last summer I worked @ the Queens Library.

Recommendations/Essay: 2 teachers, probably will be very good, I think they spoke about my superior writing ability. My main essay will be about my passion for literature and communication and how teaching a child how to read at the library emphasized that passion. As for my NYU personal statements, I like them. Lucy from I Love Lucy is my famous New Yorker, and for my summer activities I wrote about attending the Harry Potter premiere in NYC and the midnight show and how being a Potter fan isn't easy :P

Also, I have a question, would sending NYU a slightly low ACT be better for HEOP consideration? I mean, wouldn't sending them scores like a 28 or above inevitably disqualify me from HEOP? I say this because I think HEOP used to have a SAT requirement so, should I send them the 25...or wait to see what I get on the December one and send them that if it's higher?

Thanks so much. Any kind of feedback would be helpful, and if I'm missing anything please feel free to let me know!
