My guidance counselor told me that I have no shot at MIT, is she right?

No, she didn't. I'm not even applying there. But I received some scores today, and I need to know my chances.

Female
Asian (Indian)
MA
Competitive public high school (sends many to top schools including Ivys)

Cumulative GPA: 3.8 unweighted. No idea what it is weighted.

All Honors and/or AP classes...and this means 3 AP classes total. I know that's a shocker to some of you, but my school doesn't offer very many at all. This won't hurt me, right?

Rank: Top 5%

SAT (superscore):
CR-640
M- 660
W- 740 with a 12 on the essay
---->2040
I'm not the strongest test-taker, but hopefull they'll look past this?

SAT IIs: Bio-630...Math II-taking in Nov.

ECs: Please note that I moved and therefore switched schools after my freshman year. There many seem a slight inconsistency in some activities because of this.

Speech& Debate Team (9th)
-Went to many competitions and won numerous awards even on the state level. Could not continue because it was not available at my new school.

Community Service (about 200+ hours):
-Elks Lodge (over 50 hours)
-Pediatric Doctors Office (about 30 hours)
-Local Hospital (about 50+ hours)
-Various other events including Special Olympics, Soup Kitchens, Church...etc
**
Other Stuff**:
-Did some research in a Genetics Lab at URI. Did everything from PCR to Extracting DNA to helping with a primer design. Research wasn't published or anything, but spent 6 continuous weeks with countless amount of hours.

-Internined at InCube for a few weeks at the end of this summer. It's a biomedical research company in northern CA. Worked with a cell biologist and chemical engineer to help design and test a device that would be implanted in the spine to reduce pain. Paid internship...if that matters.

-In summer 2006, I went to India and for about 2 weeks and did some community service there. My grandfather lives in a small (rather poor) village, and he also works in a nearby clinic which treats patients from that area. I wored/volunteered at that clinic.

I will most likely pursue something in biology or the medical field.

Brown (ED), Tufts, BU, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, URI.

Last two are mainly backups, but I would really want to know my chances at the others. Please, if you can, tell me more than which are reaches/safeties/etc. I already know that, I just want to know realistically, the percent chances of getting in. THANKS!!

i think MIT will be a reach but then again its a reach for 99% of all the students who apply there. Ur extracurricular are great but the only problem is ur SAT scores. They arent bad but they could have been better. Can't u retake them to get them closer to 700? other than that there is no harm really to apply to MIT. Its not like u have anything to lose other than a couple(like $60 lol) dollars. My gc told me that grades were not all u needed they take into ec's and the interview. U should apply if u want to try or u may regret it. Ur definitely(99%, nothing is ever definite) in at UMASS and northeastern. BU and tufts is a good match. IMO Umass amherst isn't a bad college as it is labeled because they have a really good commonwealth(honors) college that is tough and they do have special programs like Biotap that focuses on helping people in the biology/science fields. This program allows u to be with ur peers who r in the same major. Plus its cheap. I know northeaster has a good co-op program meaning they give u internships and maybe jobs from a variety of companys. John Hopkins has a really good medical program and idk much about the other colleges srry. I am assuming u r from MA and also that ur unweighted is out of 4?

Haha never mind u r from MA. Dont read very carefully my bad.

Well, it's a reach, but you never know...

Thing is, MIT LOVES high math SATs and SAT IIs.

Chance me back?

Yea not to put any pressure on your but I think that mid-high 700s on the Math II will really help

Please chance me back.

she is dead wrong. you have a shot. u probably wont get in but dont be shocked if you do.

I think you have a fair shot. Can you still retake the SAT II?

bump....and i'm not really applying to MIT. But please chance me for the others? I will chance back.
