My home is going into Sheriff's Sale

Like the title says my home is going into sheriff’s sale. Its over half way into the semester at this point. The sale is to take place 12/6, which is very fast. I have a presentation to give Thursday, as well as a mid term. I also have a quiz tomorrow. I’m not doing terrible in my classes. I am actually doing quite well.

I’m asking for advice on what to do. My thoughts are to take withdraws across the board or ask for incompletes. If I get the incompletes I at least will not fall behind and will not have wasted my tuition. However, I do not know what is more appropriate in this situation.

I haven’t spoken to my mother yet, the homeowner, my thoughts are to not ask for incompletes/withdraws until I have. For all I know she may be talking to a lawyer, but I doubt it. So, until I speak with my mother and find out her plan. I should carry on with my studies for now. Study for the Signals and Systems quiz tomorrow and start the work for my E&M and Clinic presentation.

My biggest concern outside of having somewhere to live is keeping up with my courses this semester with the impending move. There is no way I am going to be able to move everything in our house (it is big and am the only able body basically) in the next 3 weeks and keep up with it all.

Sorry to hear this. First off - speak with your mother on what her plans for lodging are, maybe she has something in the works already. I think you have to figure out new housing for yourself immediately. If you could move before the sale couldn’t you finish the semester? How much of the logistics of moving can your mom handle? Even without being able to do the physical work could she call and get movers and a storage facility to store things in until you have time to sort through it? Or get some friends to help purge? A dumpster can be dropped off at your home to help.

You need to consider the money that you will make given this degree. The loss of your future salary for a 6 month delay to start working is way more than it will cost your mother to hire movers from Uhaul’s “Moving Help” to put the stuff in storage until the semester is over. Borrow that money if you can.

I would talk to your professors about getting an incomplete. Hopefully you have been able to keep up and are doing well so far.

Will your belongings be removed by the purchaser if you are not out of the house on the 6th? I have family members who have worked at removing belongings left behind in an eviction. Often people leave behind a lot of stuff! Hopefully you are making a plan to remove the most important items before the 6th.

Also, professors might ask for some written proof of this forced sale of your home. Not that they are nosy, but because they sometimes hear all kinds of stories from students as the semester starts to reach the end.

You need to know more about the situation. In many states, the sheriff’s sale is just one step. There may be a redemption period of up to 6 months and you do not move out of the house during that period. Even if it is a state with immediate possession by the bank, the banks don’t have the personnel to get that eviction taken care of immediately. Find out all the information before you panic. The bank may rent the house back to your mother for a short period (they like to have the homes occupied).

Talk to your mom and find out the situation. I think you can make it through the semester.

Yes, @twoinanddone is spot-on. It is very unlikely that you will actually have to move out on the date of the sheriff’s sale - which often get rescheduled. Talk to your mom.
