I don't wanna generalize BUT from everything i've seen it seems like its the Koreans that are the sterotypical overachievers. In middle school this kid got all A's for all 3 years, he was earning a B in geometry at the time before graduation. He said his mom threatened NOT to come to his graduation unless he got that A...

Another example, there's this SAT prep company started by Koreans and its dominated by mainly Koreans (no surprise) and sometimes all i thiink they care about are perfect scores and lots of A+'s on grade reports...SIGH

I admire (more like half-envy cuz I can't ever do 1/10 of what they do) their hard work and dedication, but it seems that they're really missing crucial experiences and such, and are losing out on what they want to do. Focusing on high grades, SAT's, and sleeping on average of 4 hours every day, her own words, "I got through another day" (or some sort); it's like every day's a battle or hell and life's not to be enjoyed.

I know they don't all study. They do extracurriculars. i wonder how many actually do them because they like to, though, and if the ivies did not put any sort of weight on the EC's I wonder how many of them would actually pursue them. It's a difference in culture, I guess; respect their hard work, nothing I'll ever want to do.

Hahah, my common app essay is about Korean education sucks and how its screwing us all over. :D I'm Korean, BTW, and escaped this madness after graduating elementary school. However, I must admit, even as a 6th grader, I was out till 12:30 everyday..MWF: math from 5pm-12:30am and TTH: english from 7pm-12:30am with sat/sun: 7am-3pm, science followed by art and math tutoring 'till 10pm. Yup. Like I said...it's terrible. I'm glad I'm not still sufering there (though I regrettably had to bring along my very Korean parents along with me ;) I love them - just not their Asianic emphasis on scores and numbers)

Feel lucky you are here, not there. :D YAy!!

This school is a paradise for those who want to study but hell for those who don't.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they replaced study with learn, but seriously ***. What type of screwed up administration would actually put that banner on a school?
