My List...any feedback?

I have been posting for the past couple of weeks and I have FINALLY made my list.
I am a first year actress at DePaul and there is a strong cut program so I am re-auditioning to schools for next year just in case I get cut. Last year I only auditioned to 3 schools because I wasn't sure about what I wanted to be, but now I am positive that I want to be an actress. I am doing well in college and will have a high GPA here and I am not too worried about the academic factor for acceptance since I got into NYU for arts and science last year, and NYU is probably the hardest academically on my list.

Audition schools
Juilliard
NC Arts
Rutgers
Fordham
U Arts
Roosevelt

Video Auditions
U of Arizona
NYU

BA
Indiana
Columbia - last resort (a lot of cutties go there)

I also like Hartt but I don't know where I can fit it in, I don't want more than 6 auditions...

And finally I love BU but I didn't get accepted last year (bad audition) and I am not sure if I should give up any of the schools on my list for it because it is really hard to get into and I want a variety of schools (like really really really hard and just hard), but I do really love the program but am kinda afraid, so should I fit it in?

Any suggestions, do you think it is logical (I know there are a lot of great and really schools on here but I have already made it into a hard program), any comments? I overthink everything, but I want to be prepared! Thanks everyone!

isn't U of Arizona also a cut program? I could be wrong.

I probably shouldn't post this, but I did it earlier, so why not? My d's vocal coach in NYC said to absolutely, positively stay away from Fordham. He doesn't think much of the program. Just HIS opinion; not mine! Sorry to anyone attending that school.

I'm not sure if Arizona was, does anyone know for sure? Websites never tell that VERY important info!!!

Thanks for th heads up about Fordham...I really want to try bu and that may just be the slot that it will take up. Does anyone have anything else to say about the program?

ckp,

Since you are from Illinois, I'd suggest checking out Illinois Wesleyan. My son's top 2 choices last year were Arizona and Illinois Wesleyan, and if it weren't for the diffrence in price, there's a good chance he'd be at Illinois Wesleyan now.

I asked him about the cuts at Arizona and he said they have done some in the past, but their administration got on the department that they need to graduate more people, so they did not have any cuts last year. I'm hoping it stays that way.

I forgot to mention for others that Illinois Wesleyan pays half of the airfare for people auditioning from other states, at least they did last year.

Thank you so much about the info on AZ cuts

I looked on Wesleyan's website and they said that it was a type of general theatre program and that there weren't auditions...is this wrong because you talk about flying out and auditioning and I am very confused, also I don;t think if it is just a general theatre degree I will apply because then it will go all on grades and it seems pretty top-notch there, and I'm not sure if I match up!

MT was definitely audition. I was thinking Theatre was too, but I could be wrong about that.

There is a BA Theatre degree, and BFA degrees in Theatre and Music Theatre. When we talked to a representative at a college fair last fall, her comment was that MT was a triple major and nothing else would be able to be added. Don't know if that's true...haven't researched it personally.

To ckp - Re Arizona

There's a poster on the MT thread - samia525 - that was a student at Arizona who was cut from the program. If you do a search under her name you'll find lots of info about that program +/-. Hope it all works out for u at DePaul!! My D is at Hartt MT and loves the program. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you, it was really interesting reading her story. Looks like AZ only cuts if they feel the need to, which sucks, but isn't as bad as a maditory one, but still something I really need to consider because I don't want to be starting over again and again and again.

If you don't mind could you tell me a little more about Hartt? I haven't really heard a lot about it, so I'm in the dark other than what is on their website. Have you heard anything about the acting program? Thanks again!

How is Ohio Wesleyan for music?

"Looks like AZ only cuts if they feel the need to,"

They told some of my friends who weren't cut from the program that it was a "numbers thing." Meaning there were too many people in the program - which is why I'm surprised to hear that the department was feeling pressure to graduate more students. Certainly a lot of people would either be cut from the program or leave on their own, and only FIVE people from my freshman class of ELEVEN (musical theatre only) actually graduated. Three were cut, and three left on their own (to other schools or majors.) My point is, they didn't need to cut as many people as they did when I was there.

My GPA upon leaving U of A was 3.5, and two of my former professors there wrote me fantastic recommendations for my college applications this year, in which they said wonderful things about my talent and work ethic. I certainly didn't drop the ball academically or performance-wise.

I'm glad they didn't cut anyone last year. I just wish it had been like that when my turn came up - I would've had my BFA by now! So frustrating.

My daughter is a freshman MT major at UArts. She is very happy at the school. She feels the teachers are well trained, and almost all work professionally in and around the Philadelphia/NY area. She is extremely pleased with her vocal teacher, who immediately assessed her skills (she's an alto), while previously, others tried to work where she was not truly capable. They set a plan the first day, and she has made great progress. She feels the dance classes are extremely challenging, and loves her acting studio classes. Overall, it has been a very positive experience. She's adjusting to life in the city (she's a suburban girl), learning to stay warm (she's from FL) and generally doing well. She has made so many friends, and loves the artistic atmosphere. All of the students are either theater (smallest program), dance, music or art. It's a very creative atmosphere, and very supportive of each other. She has not complained of backstabbing or jealousy. Hope this helps your decision.

I got into the UArts MT program back in 2000, and I chose U of A over them. Why did I do that? I would have loved Philadelphia! That's great that your daughter is loving it there. I remember that of all the auditions I did last time around, UArts gave the most individual attention and the most feedback. It was really nice, and it didn't feel as intimidating as some of the other schools did.

An interesting note: it was obvious that I was going to be accepted to the two programs that did eventually accept me when I auditioned. At UArts they immediately gave me great feedback, saying things like "My God, you sing so well!" and "You have a great physical response to music," etc. And at U of A, a junior Acting major approached me after my audition and informed me that Dick Hanson (the head of MT there) had asked her to give me a really good tour of the facilities because I had "done really well." So it was pretty obvious that those two programs were going to accept me immediately after the audition.

I also remember being utterly ignored by Brent Wagner at UMich when I tried to introduce myself at the end of the audition day. He was very concerned with showing around this really good-looking dark-haired guy, and it was pretty obvious that that kid was a top pick for the program. Anyway, I kind of knew I didn't have a chance there when he looked right past me as I tried to thank him for the audition and shake his hand. I'm sure he didn't mean to, but it was pretty discouraging and it definitely made me feel a bit snubbed.

Anyway, my point is this: you can usually get a pretty good idea of which programs are seriously considering you for admission on the day you audition. I knew what my letters were going to say weeks (and in some cases, months) before they came in the mail, and I bet a lot of others could probably say the same.

I agree. She definately came out of the UArts audition with the feeling that she would be accepted. They were very positive to her, and made her feel very good about her audition. After her auditions at 7 schools, she felt very positive about 4 schools. 2 she got accepted to, 1 she was waitlisted, and the last, she knew she probably didn't get in because of her SAT scores. So, I think you are correct. You can definately get a "feel" for how the auditions go by the reactions during your performances. I wish you luck whereever you are now!

I don't know if you have finalized your list yet for auditions, but you may want to consider looking into Webster University in St. Louis. They have a wonderful program. Not sure are you looking for a MT program or Acting? Webster has both and their percentage for working actors after graduation is always high. If you would like more perspective on the program, please feel free to email me.
